2 Peter 1:4–8 NKJV
4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Galatians 5:22–23 NKJV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
I’m reminded of the three wealthy brothers who decided to give their mother a gift for her birthday. The first son said he had purchased his mother a massively beautiful home. The second san said that he had bought her a luxurious sports car. The third son said , that the other brothers had lacked imagination and said that he had spent a small fortune to have a parrot trained for the last year, to recite the entire bible. After the birthday the mother sent a letter to each of the sons. To the first son she said thank you the house is beautiful but I can barely get up the steps and I have to clean this large house all by myself. To the second son she said, the car is wonderful but I can’t see to drive so the car just sits. To the third son she said, you have given me the most wonderful gift of all. It is exactly what I wanted and the chicken tasted delicious.
How did Jesus portray Self-control?
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

I. He was angry without sin.

Ephesians 4:26 NKJV
26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,
Matthew 21:12 NKJV
12 Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves.
Sometimes as Christians we will hear things like don’t be angry. Yet this is a lie. The Bible tells us to be angry, but without sin.

II. He was obedient unto death.

Philippians 2:8 NKJV
8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

III. He overcame temptation.

Hebrews 4:15 NKJV
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
I want you to hear me clearly this morning.
The Bible tells us that Jesus was tempted by sin.
However, He was not tempted to sin.
What I mean by this is that temptation was presented to him but He was not interested in it. He never allowed HIs heart or mind to entertain the thought of sin.
There was a house dog, that got lost in Africa. Along came a lion and thought, I have never seen an animal like that, I wonder what it taste likes. So, the lion charges the dog. When the dog noticed him running, he thought quickly and seeing a pile of bones nearby said, Mmmmm that lion tasted good. The lion stopped and said he wanted nothing to do with a lion eater. The whole time a monkey was sitting in a nearby tree watching the entire events. So, the monkey got down and whispered in the lions ear telling him all that had happened.
The lion told the monkey to get on his back and that they would go get the dog together. Finally when the dog saw the monkey and lion charging, he yelled, Where is that crazy monkey, I told him to bring me another lion over an hour ago.
We did not have to be a victim to sin.
We can have victory through the name of Jesus.

IV. He grieved with hope.

John 11:35 NKJV
35 Jesus wept.
John 11:40–43 NKJV
40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” 43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!”
