Life will throw you into the lion’s den of uncertainty, but the God who shut the mouths of lions is the same God who stands with you in every storm. You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you can trust the One who holds tomorrow.

Scripture

1 Kings 20:23–28 CSB
Now the king of Aram’s servants said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hill country. That’s why they were stronger than we were. Instead, we should fight with them on the plain; then we will certainly be stronger than they are. Also do this: remove each king from his position and appoint captains in their place. Raise another army for yourself like the army you lost—horse for horse, chariot for chariot—and let’s fight with them on the plain; and we will certainly be stronger than they are.” The king listened to them and did it. In the spring, Ben-hadad mobilized the Arameans and went up to Aphek to battle Israel. The Israelites mobilized, gathered supplies, and went to fight them. The Israelites camped in front of them like two little flocks of goats, while the Arameans filled the landscape. Then the man of God approached and said to the king of Israel, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because the Arameans have said, “The Lord is a god of the mountains and not a god of the valleys,” I will hand over all this whole huge army to you. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’ ”

Introduction

Church, have you ever been in a storm?
I’m not just talking about a little rain.
Have you ever faced a storm so fierce, so overwhelming, that you didn’t know if you’d make it through?
Maybe it was a doctor’s report that shook you to your core.
Maybe it was a bill you couldn’t pay,
a relationship you couldn’t fix,
a weight you couldn’t carry.
Have you ever been in a storm where the sun refused to shine and it felt like hope was all but lost?
If you’ve ever been there—if you’re there right now—tonight God has a word for you.

Context

In our text for consideration, Israel isn’t just surrounded by an army—they’re surrounded by anxiety, by fear, by the threat of total destruction.
The Arameans had launched attack after attack.
In their last battle, they met Israel on the mountaintop and got sent running.
Now they regroup, convinced the only reason they lost was because Israel’s God is a “mountain” God, not a “valley” God.
So they say, “Let’s take this fight to the valley.
Let’s catch them low.
Let’s see if their God shows up there.”
Picture it: The Israelites are weary.
Some are wounded.
Supplies are running low.
King Ahab is trembling.
The enemy surrounds them on every side, talking loud like they’ve already won.
Israel’s backs are against the wall, the odds are stacked, and hope looks like it’s on life support.
But church, isn’t that how life comes at us?
You get through one battle, and here comes another.
You climb one mountain, but now you’re staring down a deep, dark valley.
Maybe you just got out of the hospital, and now the bills are due.
Maybe you fixed one relationship, but another is falling apart.
Maybe you just got your mind right, but now your heart is breaking.
The enemy loves to attack us when we’re tired, when we’re low, when we feel like we can’t take another hit.
He whispers, “Your God was good on your best days, but where is He now?
Where is He in your depression?
Where is He in your layoffs?
Where is He when you’re crying at midnight?”
But right at that lowest point, the man of God steps forward with a word from the Lord—a word for Israel and a word for YOU:
God says to his people: “Because they said I can’t be God in your valley, I’m about to show up and show out.
I’m God of the mountain AND the valley.
I am God everywhere, every time, for everyone who calls My name!”
Don’t let the enemy put God in a box!
Don’t let your circumstances limit your faith!
God is not a seasonal Savior.
God is not a part-time Provider.
God is not just present in the sunshine—He is shelter in the time of your storm!

Breaking It Down: The Power in the Storm

Let’s be real—some of us walked in here today facing our own Aramean army.
Bills stacking up.
Health acting funny.
People turning their backs.
And the devil is whispering, “God can’t help you in this mess.”
But I came to declare—right in your midnight hour, God sends a WORD.
God says, “Because they said I can’t be God in your storm, I’m about to show them—and YOU—who I really am!”
Somebody shout, “Show Yourself, Lord!”
The valley, the low place, the storm—that’s not God’s punishment, that’s God’s platform!
If you never faced a storm, you wouldn’t know that God can calm the wind and walk on water!
If you never went through the valley, you wouldn’t know He’s a lily blooming in your darkness!
Storms don’t come to destroy you—they come to develop you.
Mountaintops make you shout, but valleys teach you how to stand firm.
In the storm, you learn what you’re made of—and more importantly, who your God is!
Anybody can praise God when the sun is shining, but faith is forged when the thunder rolls.
God’s address ain’t just on Blessing Boulevard—He lives on Broken Road, too!

God’s Mercy in the Midst of the Mess

Now, let’s look at King Ahab and Israel for a moment.
Ahab wasn’t a perfect king—he was flawed, he was fearful, and he was messy.
Israel had a history of turning their backs on God, making mistakes, losing their way.
Yet, in the middle of all that mess, God’s mercy marched right in!
Let me break it down tonight:
God didn’t wait for Israel to get it together.
He didn’t wait for Ahab to be perfect.
He didn’t say, “Fix yourself first, then I’ll come down.”
No! God stepped right into their chaos,
right into their confusion,
right into their valley,
and said, “I am here to give you ANOTHER CHANCE!”
Somebody in here needs to hear this:
God’s mercy is bigger than your mess!
His grace outruns your mistakes!
You may have fallen short, but God’s hand is still reaching for you.
You may feel like you’re losing, but God says, “I’m not done blessing you!”
He sees your pain,
He knows your failures,
and He still chooses to fight for you.
That’s the kind of God we serve!
Not a God who abandons you in the valley, but a God who walks right through it with you.
Not a God who waits for you to be perfect, but a God who perfects you through His presence!
So don’t let shame keep you silent.
Don’t let guilt keep you hidden.
God’s mercy meets you right where you are, and His mercy can bring you out on the other side!

Application

So I ask you tonight,
Where is your valley?
Where is your storm?
Maybe it’s a storm of sickness
God is a healer in the hospital AND in your home.
Maybe it’s a storm of anxiety
God’s peace will hold you at midnight when sleep won’t come.
Maybe it’s a storm of broken relationship
God restores what people throw away.
Maybe you’re just tired
God gives strength to the weary!
Hear me tonight saints of God, storms are part of everybody’s story.
But don’t waste your storm
let it drive you to your knees, and then lift you to your feet!
Storms produce testimonies you can’t get in the sunshine.
Storms squeeze out a praise you didn’t know you had.
The enemy thought your storm was your end, but God said, “This is just the beginning!”
The world says, “Lay down in the storm.”
But God says, “Stand up—victory is coming in the eye of your storm!”
God isn’t just a God of good days, He’s a God of every day.
He isn’t just a God of easy seasons, He’s a God of every rough road.
He’s not just a God of mountaintop moments, He’s a God of STORMY victories!

Closing

As I close, let me leave this in your spirit:Your storm is not your sentence.
Your valley is not your verdict.
Your trial is not your tomb.
Your pain is not your permanent address!
God is with you—right there when the clouds are black and the thunder is loud.
So yes, you might be in a storm, but
There is courage in the storm.
There is light in the darkness.
There is faith in the winds.
There is forgiveness in the rain.
There is healing in the thunder.
There is hope in the flood.
There is purpose in the pain.
There is victory in the valley!
Your valley is not your grave, it’s your garden!
Your low place is not your last place, it’s where God gets the glory!
Your struggle is not your sentence, it’s your setup for a comeback!
So walk through your storm with your head held high.
God is with you every step of the way.
His hand is on you,
His love surrounds you,
and His power is working for you.
For the Lord is our rock, in Him we hide,
He is a shelter in the time of storm;
We will be secure whatever ill betide,
He is a shelter in the time of storm.
He is a mighty rock in a weary land,
He is a cooling shade on the burning sand,
He will be our faithful guide for the pilgrim band—
He is a shelter in the time of storm!
The same God who brought Israel victory in the valley will bring you through your lowest days.
If you hold on in the storm, you’ll come out shouting on the other side!
You can be victorious even in your storm!
Why? Because we have victory in Jesus!
Faith is the victory, and faith makes you more than a conqueror!
Faith is the victory
Faith is the victory
Oh Glorious Victory, that overcomes the world!
