Re-Gathering of the Nations
Re-Gathering of the Nations
Recap
After the flood God told Noah and his family to be fruitful ,multiply, and replenish the earth .
What did man do but build a city , a tower and set out to make a name for themselves . Man did what they wanted to do which was to act (independently) without God, or His influence.
This was the sin of rebellion, pride, and disobedience.
Text :
Genesis 11:6–9 “And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.”
So why did God scatter the nations?
1 Judgement
2 Mercy
Judgement because of mans sin ( Pride ) acting independently of God and not desiring His influence. So God turns them over to the gods ( Elohim ) who are angelic beings, to govern, point, teach, and lead man back to God the Father.
Deuteronomy 32:8–9 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. 9 But the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage.
Mercy to limit mans ability to rebel and cause hurt and pain, just like in the garden of Eden. When man sinned and partook of the tree of knowledge of good and evil God put Cherubim's to guard the tree of life so that man could not live forever and thus death passed upon man. This was not only a form of judgement for mans rebellion but it was an merciful act to limit mans ability to inflict hurt and pain on themselves and others.
God foreshadows a re-gathering through Abraham
God would use the lineage of Abraham to bless all the nations and bring them back together again.
Genesis 12:1–3 “Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
Fast forward to Pentecost
There are jews from every nation in Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost .
Acts 2:5-12 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
So basically at Babel one group of people became many nations and one language became many languages or tongues !
On Pentecost the scattered nations were gathered, and the many languages had the same message ( The wonderful works of God ).
Acts 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
John 3:16–17 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
So why do we need saving ?
Just like Adam and Eve disobeyed and partook of the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil we too often times reject God’s word to fulfil the lust of our flesh . It comes down to accepting God’s Authority or autonomy ( I do what I want ) !!!
Isaiah 59:2 “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”
Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Ephesians 2:8–9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Babel’s curse is now reversed
Where pride divides, the Spirit Unifies
Where there was confusion now there's understanding
What sin scatters the Spirit gathers
Instead of making a name for ourselves, God gives us His name to bear .
