Introduction:
In this passage, Paul turns a corner — from describing the corruption of the last days to pointing Timothy back to the truth that never changes.
The world around Timothy was filled with false teachers, deception, and persecution. Yet Paul reminds him, “But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance.”
Paul is saying, “Timothy, when others turned away, you stayed faithful. You followed not just what I taught, but how I lived.”
This is the mark of a true disciple — not only learning the truth, but living it.
And that same message is for us today. In a world that is drifting from truth, God is calling His people to stand firm — to hold fast to sound doctrine, to live with purpose, to love through hardship, and to continue in the Word that equips us for every good work.
1. (V10-11) But you have carefully followed my doctrine
1. (V10-11) But you have carefully followed my doctrine
Paul turns from the subject of false teachers
Lovers of self, despisers of good, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, these false teachers even have a form of godliness
a) But you…
Timothy has a track record of Carefully following
Philippians 2:20 “For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state.”
Philippians 2:22 “But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel.”
Timothy was intentional in how he lived his life
Paul is encouraging, reminding, and making appeal to his loyalty
b) My Doctrine: The Gospel message of Jesus Christ
It’s not just Paul’s doctrine, but its the words of the prophets, the words of Jesus, and the other apostles through the revelation of the Holy Spirit
Doctrine or what you believe should make an made an impact on how you live
⚡️Application: A changed life is the evidence of sincere faith
1.1 Manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, persecutions and afflictions
1.1 Manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, persecutions and afflictions
a) Manner of life: Pauls life alined with his teaching
His character aligned with the principles he taught
He’s not living the life of a hypocrite, telling us to do one thing and he is doing another thing
Christianity is not only taught, it is also caught by seeing it lived out in other people.
⚡️Application: Often times our actions speak louder than the words
Our actions are often times more powerful than our words
b) Purpose is know God and to make Him known
Imagine going through this world with no purpose or the wrong purpose
That was me for many years. I was born into a family that raced dirt bikes
I spent over 20 years dedicating myself to becoming the best racer I could become
Then I was seriously hurt and I was no longer able to compete at a high level
I remember feeling completely empty because my purpose was revealed as empty and unfulfilling
When you reflect on your purpose today, is it a earthly pursuit or a heavenly purpose?
c) Faith: Our life fully rests in his trust in Christ
d) Love: Paul had been mistreated, rejected, abandoned, stoned and yet he never grew bitter
How do we handle mistreatment?
He knew the value in love covering the multitude of sin
Biblical Love is action, its a choice…
1 Corinthiaisns 13:4–7 “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
Paul understood how to love, which was a key for him to finish his race well
c) Persecutions: Paul faced persecutions and afflictions
At Antioch, where Paul was kicked out of the city for preaching the gospel (Acts 13:50).
At Iconium, where Paul was almost executed by stoning (Acts 14:5).
At Lystra, where they actually did stone Paul and leave him for dead (Acts 14:19).
Paul was focused on his purpose and he loved those who mistreated him
The temptation is to get bitter or angry, but biblical love does not respond in bitterness or anger
d) Afflictions: We know that Paul was beaten, stoned, went hungry, had sleepless nights, he toiled for the sake of the gospel
His boast was in Christ, Your grace is sufficient in my weakness
All of that to say, The Lord delivered me
1.2 The Lord delivered me
1.2 The Lord delivered me
a) Paul reminds Timothy of the Lord’s faithfulness to deliver him through his trials
Judaism is a religion built on a foundation of memory
The Hebrew word for remember is Zachor— which is repeated nearly 200 times in the Hebrew Bible
Paul is reminding Timothy of the Lord’s faithfulness
He delivered me and our Father will do the same for you
Its good to remind ourselves of previous victories
Can I encourage you to journal?
In times of difficulty, we can go back and be reminded of all God has brought us through
1.3 (V12) All who desire to live godly lives will suffer persecution
1.3 (V12) All who desire to live godly lives will suffer persecution
a) All those who desire to live for Christ will suffer
In other parts of the world..
In North Korea, owning a Bible can get you killed
In Nigeria a Christian dies every two hours
In Pakistan, Christians are second rate citizens, Many are referred to as chura, a derogatory term meaning "filthy.” They have no rights to any privileges
In Iran its a crime against national security to be a Christian
In the United States:
In Oregon, a small bakery was forced to shut down because their biblical beliefs did not allow them make a cake for a lesbian couple.
In Indiana, a small-town pizzeria owned by a Christian family closed its doors after receiving death and firebombing threats after the owner said in a television interview that he would not want to cater a gay wedding because it would conflict with his faith.
1.4 (V13) Evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse
1.4 (V13) Evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse
a) A common theme, is that of a warning of the evil time and evil men growing worse by the day
Imposter is a deceiver, leading people astray
They refuse to receive the love and truth
2 Thessalonians 2:11 “And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,”
I believe the reason people are so passionate about
⚡ Application: Stand firm in truth even when deception is increasing.
2. (V14) But now you must continue in these things that you have assured of
2. (V14) But now you must continue in these things that you have assured of
a) Paul charing Timothy to continue to be faithful to the pattern of ministry over a life time
Despite the persecution, despite the evil times, despite all the difficult times that are associated with ministry, you must continue to be faithful to what you know and are assured of
I keep seeing Jason in these scriptures instead of Timothy
2 Timothy 1:13 “Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.”
Titus 1:9 “holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.”
2.1 (V15) The things you have learned from childhood
2.1 (V15) The things you have learned from childhood
a) Paul points Timothy back to the foundation of faith — what he’s been taught since childhood.
Its only through the scriptures he has anything to offer anyone
b) The scriptures make him wise for salvation
Salvation is through faith alone
2.2 (V16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God
2.2 (V16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God
a) All scripture, is the words of the O.T prophets, Jesus, and the apostles
OT & NT are equally the inspired word of God
When Jesus taught, he used the OT as his foundation
John 16:13 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”
This would fulfill the promise Jesus made that the Holy Spirit would speak to the apostles and lead them into all truth.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.”
The people recieved it as the word of God
2 Peter 3:15–16 “and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.”
Peter recognized Paul as speaking forth the word of God
b) The word inspiration of God means to be God-Breathed
Gods words was given through man inspired by the Holy Spirit to make it without error
Some people pick and choose what they believe or choose not to believe, but that is a mistake because its all the inspired word of God
c) The Word of God is profitable for…
Doctrine –
What is true about God, the world we live in, and the world to come
Reproof & Correction-
The authority to rebuke and correct us. We are all under the authority of God’s word, and when the Bible exposes our doctrine or our conduct as wrong, we are wrong.
Instruction In righteousness –
Guiding believers in God’s ways
Romans 15:4 “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.”
2.3 (V17) That the man of God may be complete, throughly equipped for every good work
2.3 (V17) That the man of God may be complete, throughly equipped for every good work
a) The man of God who spends time in the word is throughly equipped to provide spiritual leadership to others
The Word of God is your daily food
When you go long periods with eating food, you’re body becomes weak and begins to shut down
Maybe you hear this morning and feel weak to overcome temptation, or lacking joy, and feeling overwhelmed
• ⚡ Application: Scripture is not optional — it’s essential for a strong, equipped life of faith.
Make it a priority each day to spend time with the Lord through meditating in His and seeking the Lord through prayer
Feed your spirit to overcome the flesh
