John the Baptist’s Question

John the Baptist had been unwavering in the faith.
John 1:29 “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
John 3:30 “He must increase, but I must decrease.””
See Mark 6:17-18...
Suffering and despair caused doubts to arise.
Trials and tribulations, a lack of knowledge and understanding of Scripture, unrealistic expectations, and delayed answer to prayer can all contribute to doubt.
Mark 9:24 “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!””
Suffering is inevitable for God’s people.
2 Timothy 3:12 “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,”
John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.””

The Response of Christ

Christ responded with kindness and compassion.
See Isaiah 42:1-4...
Hebrews 4:15–16 “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
John needed to be reminded of Christ’s word and work.
Christ’s references: Isaiah 35:4-6 and Isaiah 61:1-3...
Christ reminded John that his suffering wasn’t in vain.
See Matthew 5:10-12...

How Christ Saw John

Christ had not forgotten John’s faithfulness.
Hebrews 6:10 “For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.”
Christ had not forgotten John’s purpose.
Malachi 3:1 ““Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.” (see Isaiah 40:3, Malachi 4:5)
Christ reminds us of the worth of His kingdom.
See Hebrews 11:32-40...
See 1 Peter 1:10-12...
