Intro

Last week we jumped into the final plague on Egypt where God says there will be “one plague more upon Egypt.”
Today will hopefully be somewhat more of an academic Bible study in Exodus 12….
This is a combination of the Passover being instituted by God as well as the bringing on of the final plague…
By way of introduction:
Think back to the promises given:
Pharaoh’s promise to Joseph **at the beginning BEFORE MOSES, one Pharaoh removed**
Genesis 45:16–20 KJV 1900
16 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying, Joseph’s brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants. 17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan; 18 And take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land. 19 Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. 20 Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours.
2. God’s promise to Jacob
Genesis 46:1–4 KJV 1900
1 And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. 2 And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. 3 And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation: 4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
Text for today:
Exodus 12:1–27 KJV 1900
1 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, 2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. 3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: 4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: 6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. 7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. 8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. 10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. 11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s passover. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. 13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. 14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. 15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. 16 And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you. 17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. 18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. 19 Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. 20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread. 21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. 22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. 23 For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. 24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. 25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the Lord will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. 26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? 27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.

1. The Picture of Passover

God told us the purpose of not just passover, but all of those feasts mentioned in Leviticus...
Colossians 2:16–17 KJV 1900
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
a.) They were a “shadow of things to come”...
Just before the death of the firstborn was the passover meal (same with Jesus)
Matthew 26:17–19 KJV 1900
17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? 18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
b.) Christ IS our passover Lamb (He was crucified ON Passover)
1 Corinthians 5:7 KJV 1900
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
1 Peter 1:18–19 KJV 1900
18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
The requirement for the Exodus 12 Passover:
Exodus 12:5–13 KJV 1900
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish,
John 1:29 KJV 1900
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Notice with me:
Exodus 12:3–5 KJV 1900
3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: 4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
From “a lamb” to “the lamb” to “YOUR lamb”
The requirement: a lamb - not just any lamb - a lamb without blemish
Notice: The living lamb couldn’t deliver them… death was necessary
Hebrews 9:22 KJV 1900
22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Hebrews 2:9 KJV 1900
9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
It only took God one day to pay for sin of all time...
It only took God one day to deliver Israel from 430 years of bondage...
Individual sole liberty - each person is responsible for their own relationship with God
During the Old Testament, they did the Passover as instructed by God...
In the New Testament, we hold the Lord’s Supper as instructed by God...
Why a difference?
Hebrews 9:16–17 KJV 1900
16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
Upon the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the new testament came in force...
With that, many things changed...
Since these feasts and meals were given to the Jewish people for a “shadow of things to come”… those things DID come to pass...
The Jews have two new years today:
The Biblical new year (Passover)
The Secular new year (Rosh Hashanah - in the 7th month)
The picture: Death of the lamb without blemish… As the blood was applied to the posts, the death angel would pass over that home. Now, we partake in the Lord’s supper that signifies the body and the blood.
Memorials are important to God:
1 Corinthians 11:24–26 KJV 1900
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

2. The Purpose of Passover

The purpose of the Passover and killing of the pascal lamb was that no one should die...
No one had to die that day...
No one has to die today either...
The only reason anyone died on that 10th and final plague was because they did not obey the Word of God...
Had they gotten their lamb...
Demonstration of modern day Passover:
There is weeks long of preparation for Passover
They search through their homes and remove all leaven (called “Kimetz”)
The night before they have a ceremony where the mother places some crumbs of kimetz in 5-7 places in the home
The youngest participant that year goes through the home with the father looking for the kimetz with a candle
The father follows them with a white feather and a wooden spoon
When he finds the kimetz, the father will sweep up the kimetz and place it in a rag
He will fold the rag and place it outside the home
The next day he will burn the kimetz
Why do they do that?
Zephaniah 1:12 KJV 1900
12 And it shall come to pass at that time, That I will search Jerusalem with candles, And punish the men that are settled on their lees: That say in their heart, The Lord will not do good, neither will he do evil.
They think that if God will search Jerusalem with candles, than they should too...
The fire is the fire of judgement for the leven (Sin)...
They say if you have leven in your home than you have leven in your heart...
1 Corinthians 5:8 KJV 1900
8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Holding leven (sin) in your life will hinder your walk with God...
Exodus 13:7 KJV 1900
7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.
Not in your hands; or
In your homes....
The problem is that a little leven can destroy the entire thing...
1 Corinthians 5:6 KJV 1900
6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
John 2:13–16 KJV 1900
13 And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; 16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.
In Israel they have very large Passover meals...
The stores offer payment plans to pay off the meal...
Interesting note: they don’t have a lamb or anything to resemble the lamb portion of the OT Passover
Reason: Deuteronomy 16:16
Deuteronomy 16:16 KJV 1900
16 Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the Lord empty:
They said the temple was the place of sacrifice and since the temple was destroyed, there is no longer a place of sacrifice...
During the Passover meal, they had a cup on the table...
As part of their ceremony, they would use that cup to wash their hands...
It was supposed to go from the fingertips down to the elbow and they would pour it 3 times...
(This is why they got mad at the apostles for eating with unwashen hands...
** Modern Passover is VERY tradition based
