Potential Impact
These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. v. 11
Background, John 14:1–7 I go to prepare a place for you? And I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”
“Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Abiding in Jesus vv. 1-3

Vine
Prune v.2
The process promotes stronger branches and better fruit.
We are pruned because we are bearing fruit, not for discipline.
Bear fruit v. 2
Holy Spirit
Jn 14:20, 23, 26 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. . . . Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. . . .“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Outward
Abiding, Harmony, Praise, Transformation, Kingdom Impact
Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken v. 3
John 13:8–10 “Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.””
Must allow Jesus to serve you (If I do not wash) in atonement.
They were clean through the teaching of Jesus, but they had a little more through the example of servanthood that was needed (feet).

What It Means to Abide in Jesus v. 4-9

Abide in His Words v. 7

John 8:31–32 ESV
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Abide in His Love v. 9

John 15:13 ESV
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Your Fruit Must Abide v. 16, 8

Your fruit should abide
So prove to be my disciple
A disciple is someone who develops a lifelong, loving relationship with the living Christ, having transformed their previous way of life by no longer living in rebellion against God, instead, is they are committed to emulating Jesus by obeying His teachings, having accepted Jesus' death as a means of removing the punishment deserved for their sins and believes they are now in right standing with God through the righteousness of Jesus.

Results of Abiding in Jesus vv. 7-8

Answered Prayer v. 7

Ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you
John 14:14 ESV
If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
According to My character
Matthew 6:10 ESV
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
James 4:15 ESV
Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”
Prayer is a time when YHWH shows us His will is for a specific situation. We align our will with God’s and then, together, we move forward in victory.
It seems, God’s means are flexible. He allows us to partner with him in how His will is played out. Some things God won’t do until we ask.
God interacts but does not react.
Three keys to prayer
Dependence on God
Understanding of your lack
Acknowledges God’s strength

God is Glorified v. 8

Father is glorified
Do we recognize this is for the glory of God and not our ease and comfort?
This shift in perspective allows us to see our problems as opportunities.
David taking sheep from lions moths to prepare for Goliath. ‌
