“FAITHFUL UNTIL THE END”
Daniel 12:1–13 (CSB)
Series: Living Faithful in a Falling World
INTRODUCTION
As we reach the end of Daniel’s book, we find Daniel—now in his 80s or 90s—still faithful, still prayerful, still leaning on God. The world around him has changed, kingdoms have risen and fallen, but one thing has remained constant: Daniel’s God.
And now, in chapter 12, God pulls back the curtain once more—not on Babylon or Persia, but on the end of all things. Daniel sees a time of distress, a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous, and a call for God’s people to persevere until the end.
This chapter is the perfect conclusion to our series:
Living Faithful in a Falling World.
Because Daniel 12 tells us exactly why we can live faithfully—it’s because our hope is fixed on the God who holds the future, the resurrection, and the reward of His people.
1. THE TIME OF TROUBLE (v. 1)
1. THE TIME OF TROUBLE (v. 1)
God’s people will face distress
“At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch over your people, will rise up. There will be a time of distress such as never has occurred since nations came into being until that time. But at that time all your people who are found written in the book will escape.” — Daniel 12:1 (CSB)
“At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch over your people, will rise up. There will be a time of distress such as never has occurred since nations came into being until that time. But at that time all your people who are found written in the book will escape.” — Daniel 12:1 (CSB)
Daniel is shown that even the faithful will experience real, intense trouble. This is not the first time God warns of trials (John 16:33), but here the emphasis is on the uniqueness and severity of the distress.
A. Trouble does not mean abandonment

Even in distress, “Michael… will rise up.”God is active. Heaven is not passive. The righteous are not forgotten.

God does not promise the absence of trouble, but He promises deliverance through it.
C. Faithfulness matters most in times of pressure
C. Faithfulness matters most in times of pressure
Daniel had been faithful in Babylon, Persia, in the lions’ den, and in prayer. His faithfulness under pressure becomes a picture of the end-time faithfulness of God’s people.
Application:We cannot control the troubles of the world around us, but we can control our response to them. The faithful do not fold—they remain firm.

Resurrection and reward
“Many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake—some to eternal life, and some to disgrace and eternal contempt.” — Daniel 12:2 (CSB)
“Many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake—some to eternal life, and some to disgrace and eternal contempt.” — Daniel 12:2 (CSB)
Daniel 12 contains one of the clearest Old Testament statements of bodily resurrection.
A. A resurrection for both the righteous and the wicked
A. A resurrection for both the righteous and the wicked
This reminds us that:
Life is not the end
Death does not have the last word
Every human being will stand before God
The righteous awake to eternal life, the wicked to eternal contempt.
B. The faithful will shine
B. The faithful will shine
“Those who have insight will shine like the bright expanse of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” — Daniel 12:3 (CSB)
“Those who have insight will shine like the bright expanse of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” — Daniel 12:3 (CSB)
Two groups are highlighted:
Those who have insight– Those who remained faithful
– Those who remained faithful– Those who understood God’s truth
– Those who understood God’s truth– Those who lived with eternal perspective
– Those who lived with eternal perspective
Those who lead many to righteousness– Soul-winners
– Soul-winners– Disciple-makers
– Disciple-makers– Those who lived missionally in a pagan world (like Daniel!)
– Those who lived missionally in a pagan world (like Daniel!)
This is the reward of the faithful.
C. The message is sealed but not silenced (v. 4)
C. The message is sealed but not silenced (v. 4)
Daniel is told to “seal the book until the time of the end.”
This means:
Protect it
Preserve it
Treasure it
Trust that future generations will need it even more
Application:Our faithfulness is never wasted. God sees, God remembers, and God rewards. And the future God promises gives meaning to the faithfulness we offer today.

3. THE TASK OF THE FAITHFUL (vv. 5–13)
3. THE TASK OF THE FAITHFUL (vv. 5–13)
“Go your way until the end”
Daniel watches two angels and a man clothed in linen (likely the pre-incarnate Christ) speak about the end of days. Daniel hears, but he does not understand everything.
We are told Daniel is confused—and that encourages us. Even Daniel couldn’t wrap his mind fully around God’s timeline. But the Lord gives Daniel a simple, beautiful command:
“Go your way until the end.” — Daniel 12:13
“Go your way until the end.” — Daniel 12:13
A. Our calling is faithfulness, not full comprehension
A. Our calling is faithfulness, not full comprehension
God does not expect us to understand every detail of prophecy. But He does expect faithfulness, obedience, and endurance.
But He does expect faithfulness, obedience, and endurance.
B. The faithful are refined, purified, and cleansed
B. The faithful are refined, purified, and cleansed
“Many will be purified, cleansed, and refined…” — Daniel 12:10
“Many will be purified, cleansed, and refined…” — Daniel 12:10
Trials are not pointless—they shape the saints.Difficulty produces maturity.
Difficulty produces maturity.Pressure purifies the faithful.
Pressure purifies the faithful.
C. Our end is not the end—resurrection awaits
C. Our end is not the end—resurrection awaits
The final verse of Daniel is breathtaking:
“You will rest, and then stand to receive your allotted inheritance at the end of the days.” — Daniel 12:13 (CSB)
“You will rest, and then stand to receive your allotted inheritance at the end of the days.” — Daniel 12:13 (CSB)
For Daniel…For every believer…
For every believer…For you and me…
For you and me…
There is rest.There is resurrection.
There is resurrection.There is reward.
There is reward.
Application:God calls us to keep walking, keep praying, keep trusting, keep serving. We do not need all the answers—we only need to remain faithful until the end.
God calls us to keep walking, keep praying, keep trusting, keep serving. We do not need all the answers—we only need to remain faithful until the end.
APPLICATION
We are called to faithfulness and can rest in the hope of eternal life.
Daniel 12 brings together three truths every believer needs:
There will be trouble — but God will be with us.
There will be triumph — God will raise His people to eternal joy.
There is a task — be faithful until the end.
This is how we live faithful in a falling world.
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
The world around us is shaking. The kingdoms of men rise and fall. Culture changes. Morals drift. But Daniel reminds us: God’s kingdom is coming, God’s people will rise, and God’s final word is victory.
Daniel lived faithfully from Babylon to Persia—and now he is told he will rise again to receive his reward.
May we, too, hear the Lord say:
“Go your way until the end.”
Stay faithful.Stay steady.
Stay steady.Stay hopeful.
Stay hopeful.Your King is coming.
Your King is coming.
INVITATION
Maybe today you feel the pressure of the world around you. Maybe you feel weary, confused, or overwhelmed.
Today, come to the God who promises:
Deliverance in distress
Resurrection after death
Reward after faithfulness
Hope beyond this life
Come to Christ—the One who conquered death, who holds the future, and who will raise His people at the last day.
