Isaiah 46:1-13

Introduction

e.g. Boot full of donations
More than once we have spent months driving around with our boot full of bags of things to give away/donate
Carry them around much longer than we need to
They get in the way when you try to put your shopping in the car
We’ve even had to take them out of the car so we could put things in for a bbq or picnic & then put them back in the car when we get back
We have them in the car with good intentions to help others by donating them but it becomes a real burden
Life can be similar - carry things around longer than we need with good intentions but all it does is cause us more work & trouble
We need to get rid of the burdens we carry
READ Isaiah 46:1-13
As God continues to direct attention to future & salvation He is going to bring He gives us this image of carrying burdens
For Israel (& many today) the burden of carrying our idols / gods is literal
For most of us here the image is figurative in that we’re loaded down with statues but different kinds of idols & gods
The things we worship today are truly no less burdensome than saddle bag full of idols
God uses this imagery to tell His people they don’t need to carry their gods around because God will carry His people

People Carry Their gods

Isaiah 46:1-2, 6-7

gods are a burden

The gods of Babylon

They make us weary

They can’t save us

gods make us work

We make the gods

We work to please the gods

We are left empty

gods will bow down

We bow in worship

All bow in worship to the Lord

Submit to the Lord

God Carries His People

Isaiah 46:3-7

God carries His people’s burdens

Find Rest in His Grace

He is gracious

God doesn’t change

His care for you doesn’t change

Believe God

Faith is a Response to Revelation

Take it to heart

Listen you arrogant in heart

Listen you weak in heart
