Intro

This lesson deals with the kind of holy living that the Spirit makes possible, something that is often called sanctification.
holiness. Set apart for perfection, for purity, for goodness, for service to God.
Sanctification is basically a matter of getting rid of wrong attitudes, desires, acts, and relationships, and entering into relationships that are pleasing to God and according to His Word and will. You cannot go back!

The Australian coat of arms pictures two creatures—the emu, a flightless bird, and the kangaroo. The animals were chosen because they share a characteristic that appealed to the Australian citizens. Both the emu and the kangaroo can move only forward, not back. The emu’s three-toed foot causes it to fall if it tries to go backwards, and the kangaroo is prevented from moving in reverse by its large tail.

Those who truly choose to follow Jesus become like the emu and kangaroo, moving only forward, never back.

Luke 9:62 NIV
Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

N.1 - Dedicated to God

Saint means “a separeted one.”
1A. First Step: Separated from Sin.
Colossians 1:13–14 NIV
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
This seems to mean that there is an aspect of sanctification which takes place in an instant at the moment we are born again. We become a new creation in Christ
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
We are called by the Holy Spirit to depart from evil, to turn away from sin.
Psalm 34:14 NIV
Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
Turn means changing direction, to abandon, desist from.
1B. Second Step: Separeted to God and His Service.
Exodus 29:44 NIV
“So I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar and will consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests.
Moses spoke of holy vessels. These were separated from ordinary use. No one would think of taking them into their kitchen and using them for their own personal use. But that is not what made them holy. They were holy because they were anointed for service in the tabernacle or temple. They were set apart for the service of the Lord.
Question: Lists the two stages of sanctification and explains why it is necessary to take the second step as well.

N.2 - Holy Living

2A. Cooperating with the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 5:48 NIV
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
It is true that the word perfect in the Bible often means “mature or complete.”
Some say that this state of perfection cannot be fully reached in this life, but we must press on toward it, grow toward it.
Philippians 3:12 NIV
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.
Perfection is a process, a progressive action that the Holy Spirit carries out in us every day through our cooperation and our will to be transformed into the image of the Son of God, Christ Jesus.
Edward H. Bickersteth, in his book The Holy Spirit (Grand Rapids: Kregel Publications, 1959 reprint, pages 142–143) has made an analogy between the gradual and progressive work of creation in the new man and the six days of creation in Genesis. This, too, was a progressive work. As God spoke the word, there was light. He spoke the word again, and the barrenness was replaced by continents, hills, vegetation. As He continued to speak the word, the sun, moon, and stars were set in place; then fish, fowl, animals; and finally humans, created in His image, were brought forth. At each stage one might say that old things were passed away and all things were become new. “Yet there was an orderly and progressive advancement towards perfection . . . in like measure shall we all be changed into the same image from glory to glory by the Lord the Spirit.”
Quiz: What does this suggest to you about the nature of sanctification as we experience it in our Christian life? Continuous and progressive

N.3 - Development of the Whole Person

There are rapid periods of growth followed by periods of little growth. Learning a skill does not take place at a steady rate, either. One struggles along for a while, makes a sudden advance, then struggles along at the new level again (crisis sanctification and progressive sanctification).
3A. Spiritual Knowledge.
Luke 5:8 NIV
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!
The knowledge we receive from the Holy Spirit concerns the reality of who we are and who God is.
3B. Willing to Serve.
Through sanctification by the Spirit, then, we should also expect an increasing willingness to serve our Lord and suffer with Him and for Him.
Acts 10:38 NIV
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
3C. Looking for Christ’s coming.
Romans 5:2 NIV
through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
Since we abound in hope through the Holy Spirit, we should expect that the Spirit’s sanctifying work will direct more and more toward that “blessed hope” of the soon return of our wonderful Lord. What a wonderful prospect we have of living and reigning with Jesus!

N.4 - Led by the Spirit

Romans 8:14 NIV
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
One of the most important evidences of the work of the Holy Spirit, both in the church and in the lives of individuals, was the way the Spirit of God led them: Peter, Philip, the Church in Antioch and Paul.
