Jesus gave his life for us. His sacrifice was prefigured by the many sacrifices for sin in the old covenant, and before. Most significantly, the lamb sacrificed at the Passover represented Christ's giving of himself as the Lamb of God who takes away sins. While those sacrifices pointed forward to the cross, the Lord's Table looks back to the cross. In the Last Supper, Jesus disestablishes the old covenant and establishes the new. Let us look to him for forgiveness of sins, and never wander far from the cross.
