Last week we looked at the Arrival of the Holy Spirit. We ended with...these people are drunk!

Peter’s sermon.

He addresses the current situation and accusations. Acts 2:14-15

Acts 2:14–15 NASB95
But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;

Then he uses OT Prophecy

Acts 2:16 NASB95
but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:
Joel 2:28–32 NASB95
“It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. “I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke. “The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. “And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the Lord has said, Even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.
Peter quotes Joel almost verbetim.
Acts 2:17–21 NASB95
And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy. ‘And I will grant wonders in the sky above And signs on the earth below, Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. ‘The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come. ‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Let’s break this prophecy down.
Acts 2:17–18 NASB95
And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy.
Who is affected by the Spirit?
Spirit is for ALL Mankind
Sons and Daughters will Prophesy (Children)
Young men - Visions
Old Men - Dreams (All Ages)
Even the Bondservants, Men and Women (EVERYBODY)
I WILL POUR FORTH MY SPIRIT AND THEY WILL PROPHESY.
Before the Day of Pentecost...Only Priests and Prophets would interpret God’s messages.
Now, every believer has that opportunity. Through the Holy Spirit.
Then Joel moves on to the Sign and Wonders
Acts 2:19–21 NASB95
And I will grant wonders in the sky above And signs on the earth below, Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. ‘The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come. ‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Like last week when we looked at the Wind and the Fire...both are controlled by God.
As are the sun and moon. We know that Solar and lunar eclipses happen with regularity.
Solar eclipses happen 2-5 times each year (5 rare)
Total Solar eclipses where the moon totally blocks the sun every 18 months.
Total Solar eclipses that are visible anywhere on earth at the same time only happen every 400 years.
Blood moons happen from 2-4 a year to 2.5 years. Next on eis March 3, 2026...Not expecting another one until 2028-2029
That being said...we don’t know when the Lord is coming back. But I firmly believe that He has given us these signs as a reference point to be ready. Not to predict a time...but to be ready in season and out of season.
So let’s get back to the sermon.

Peter then moves from the Prophets to the Messiah.

Peter preached Jesus’ Life

Acts 2:22 NASB95
“Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—

Peter preached Jesus’ Death

Acts 2:23 NASB95
this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.

Peter Preached Jesus’ Resurrection

Acts 2:24–32 NASB95
“But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. “For David says of Him, ‘I saw the Lord always in my presence; For He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken. ‘Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; Moreover my flesh also will live in hope; Because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, Nor allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. ‘You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’ “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. “And so, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne, he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay. “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.
Peter now Quotes David from Psalm 16:8-11
Psalm 16:8–11 NASB95
I have set the Lord continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely. For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.
This is a prophetic word...not pertaining to David but to Jesus and His resurrection. You will not allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
We have spoken of the importance of the Resurrection. The Gospel hinges on it. Romans 10:9-10
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Resurrection is a key component of our salvation.
John MacArthur said “ Without it, His death becomes the heroic death of a noble martyr, the pathetic death of a madman, or the execution of a fraud.
Peter proclaims here that they were witnesses to Jesus’ resurrection. v32

Finally Peter exalts Jesus in His preaching

Acts 2:33–36 NASB95
“Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’ “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Once again, Peter quotes David in Psalm 110:1
Psalm 110:1 NASB95
The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
This footstool is a figure of speech denoting Jesus’ superiorority over the world. He is Lord. He is King. ANd one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
So Peter’s sermon can be a model for our modern day preaching.
Do not neglect the Old Testament. The OT IS the story of Jesus’
Preach Jesus’ life
Preach Jesus’ death
Preach Jesus’ resurrection.
and proclaim how God exalted Him to HIs right hand.
