Jesus: David’s Greater Son
Questions marked with a P are primary to the sermon. If you are not planning on answering all the
questions, answer these first.
Call to Worship: Psalm 2:7-12
1. Brother Noah said that the children are being taught that the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation,
is the story of Jesus. Indeed, Jesus challenged the religious leaders to find references to Him in
the Old Testament (John 5:39). Explain how Jesus' story is foreshadowed in the following:
a. Life of Abraham.
b. P Life of David.
c. The Flood.
2. P At least one religious group uses Psalm 2:7 as a proof text for Jesus being created by (rather
than coexistent with) Jehovah. How would you respond?
3. How do we see both mercy and judgment exercised simultaneously in verses 9-12?
Sermon: Luke 1:32-33
I. The Identity of the King: A Divine Son – Luke 1:32a
4. P Pastor Paul cautioned us that if we view David's life as God's process for construction of the
temple, we would be missing an important point. What was that point?
5. “David made some BAD choices. Thank heaven I would never have made those choices. Come
to think of it, I would never have been fooled by a talking snake.”
a. What is the error in that line of reasoning?
b. P What is a better way of reasoning through scripture?
6. List at least the two ways that were mentioned in the sermon that we are like God. Then list
two we ways we are unlike God.
7. In both Biblical and secular history, we are overwhelmed with the incidents of cruelty and
injustice. Why did God set up the universe this way?
8. P State scriptures that present Jesus as: 1) King by divine fiat, and 2) King as David's descendant.
II. The Inheritance of the King: A Promised Throne – Luke 1:32b
9. P Where in scripture do we see fulfillment of Samuel's prophesy in 2 Samuel 7:16?
10. What were some sins David committed or mistakes he made that might, had not God been
sovereign, have undone his kingdom?
11. There is an element of truth in referring to Jesus as a second David or a second Adam. However,
there is a way in which these designations fall far short. How do they fall short?
III. The Kingship Perfected – Luke 1:33a
1. Pastor Paul cautioned us to not let current events supersede, in our attention and concern, the
unfolding of God's plan for an eternal kingdom. Since current events may affect our health,
prosperity, or even survival, how do we keep the proper perspective?
2. P In what respects is Jesus already king, and in what respects will he be king when he returns?
IV. The Duration of the Kingdom: An Eternal Dominion – Luke 1:33b
1. Give some scriptural examples of how God remained engaged with people or groups, even after
they defied him.
2. AI Question: What practices can you adopt to ensure that success or leadership doesn’t lead to
pride but instead deepens your dependence on God?
Prayer Points:
•
Praise God for His sovereign, covenant faithfulness—that His good plan of salvation was never
defeated by human sin or failure.
•
Thank Jesus, David’s Greater Son, for being the perfect, sinless King we could never be and that
David could never be.
•
Ask for grace to live as faithful citizens of His spiritual kingdom, submitting our hearts to His
eternal reign and Word and knowing that our King reigns forever and that His kingdom will have
no end.
