Sermon Introduction – Genesis 6
Sermon Introduction – Genesis 6
The theme of Genesis 6 is the strong contrast between Noah’s righteousness and the world’s corruption.
The chapter opens with one of the darkest pictures of humanity in all of Scripture. The population was exploding, sin was multiplying, and the heart of man was completely given over to evil.
Genesis 6:5 says, “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” This wasn’t just outward rebellion—it was inward rot. Every thought, every desire, every intention was bent away from God.
Verse 6 tells us, “And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.” Imagine that—human sin broke the heart of God. The world He created to be good had become violent, corrupt, and filled with perversion.
The population was exploding (v.1), but so was wickedness.
There was sexual perversion and demonic activity (v.2).
Evil filled every heart (v.5).
Corruption and violence filled the earth (v.11).
Yet in the midst of this moral darkness, one man stood out—Noah. While the world’s heart was filled with evil, Noah’s heart was turned toward God. While the world was corrupt, Noah was blameless. While others ignored God’s voice, Noah walked with Him.
Genesis 6 reminds us that even in the darkest times, God always has a remnant—someone who chooses to walk with Him when everyone else walks away.
1. (V9) Noah was a just man, perfect in his generation and he walked with God
1. (V9) Noah was a just man, perfect in his generation and he walked with God
Context: The earth corrupt (Repeated)
All flesh corrupted
a) Noah was not perfect, only Jesus lived a perfect life
Noah had a righteous standing before God
Like Abraham, his righteousness was a gift in response to his personal faith
Like our righteousness comes from our faith in Christ
When God looks upon us, He doesn’t see all the bad things we have done
He was blameless, he was a man of integrity
People found no fault in him
b) Noah was uncorrupted by Satan’s plan
Satan had corrupted everyone on earth, to the point God wiped the earth clean
(V8) Noah found grace with God
Noah did not live according to the evil times
Noah’s life proved his faith, he lived like he believed
⚡️Our goal is to live every day as the new creation that we became when we began to walk with Christ
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
c) Noah walked with God
The Bible says Noah walked with God, like his grandfather Enoch
Walk is the biblical expression for fellowship and obedience that results in divine favor
It involves friendship, intimacy, and love, its personal between you and God
He took a stand for God
1.1 (V11-12) All flesh corrupted the earth
1.1 (V11-12) All flesh corrupted the earth
a) Everyone did what was right in there own eyes
People were lovers of self rather than lovers of God
2 Timothy 3:2–4 “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,”
The consequence, the earth had become a dark place that was corrupted and filled with violence
It had become so bad, God would destroy the people with a flood
1.2 (V13) I will destroy them with the earth
1.2 (V13) I will destroy them with the earth
a) The times: Everyone was eating and drinking, not a care in the world
Not knowing Judgement was coming
Similar to the times today, it appears people can live any way they want and it can look like they’re getting away with it
People Mock God with their words and by the way they live their life
b) What was Noah thinking when God said he was going to destroy everything?
I would imagine Noah felt sadness and grief
As we should feel for the world perishing around us
1.2 (V14-15) Make yourself an ark
1.2 (V14-15) Make yourself an ark
a) God spoke to Noah
Because Noah was an upright man and he fellowshipped with God, God spoke to him
b) The ark
The pitch worked to waterproof the wood. God told Noah to cover it with pitch inside and outside, which makes it possible that the ark was preserved for a long time.
The ark was as long as a 30-story building and it was about 75 feet wide and 45 feet high.
What is described is not really a boat, but a well-ventilated barge meant only to float and not to sail anywhere.
c) By faith Noah made the ark
Noah had more questions than answers at this point
Noah, I’m going to destroy everything with a floodwater
Here is some dimensions, go build this floating container and I will make a covenant with you
By faith Noah obeyed and built the ark
Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”
Application ⚡️Often times God doesn’t lay out a ten step plan for us
He gives is one step at a time
Its not until we obey the first step that he reveals the second step
A step of faith is not being assured of the outcome..
When God called us from Huntington Beach to Sonora there was zero security
In fact, people looked at me as the crazy person building an ark without any rain
1.3 (V16) Set the door on its side
1.3 (V16) Set the door on its side
John 10:9 “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”
1.4 (V18) But I will establish My covenant with you
1.4 (V18) But I will establish My covenant with you
a) Def. of Covenant- An agreement between two parties in which they pledge themselves in loyalty to one another.
Genesis 9 will give us more details into the Noahic covenant
The Noahic Covenant: is the promise that God made to Noah and his descendants after the flood, which destroyed the world.
Three distinguishing features:
First, it is an unconditional covenant.
Second, it was made to Noah and all his descendants as well as “every living creature” and the earth in general
Third, it was sealed with a sign, the rainbow.
1.5 (V22) Thus Noah did, according to all that God commanded, so he did
1.5 (V22) Thus Noah did, according to all that God commanded, so he did
a) Noah was faithful to complete the job
He was obedient and it was counted to him as righteousness
2 Peter 2:5 “and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;”
Note:
Giants on the earth in those days: (Men of the renown)
This refers to the unnatural offspring of the union between the sons of God and the daughters of men, though there were people of unusual size on the earth both before and after the flood (and also afterward). These ones before the flood were unique because of the demonic element of their parentage. They were the mighty men of old, men of renown.
