Recap

We have entered the 10th and final plague upon Egypt
In this passage (Exodus 12), we find God instituting the Passover for the Jewish people…
Along with it you find the feast of unleavened bread as well as the Sabbath…
Again, all instituted by God to Israel…
We spoke last week on the Picture of the Passover:
It was a shadow of “things to come”
We saw some similarities of the things that DID come:
Pascal lamb was to be killed as a substitutionary atonement so the blood could cover and the plague could be avoided
Jesus Christ, our Passover, was our substitutionary atonement and His blood covers us as well so hell could be avoided
The requirement of the pascal lamb was that it had to be without blemish
Our sacrificial Lamb in Jesus also had to be without blemish, of which He was
In the Passover, the death of the lamb was required for every person and household
With us, the Lamb has already died and rose again and the application of His blood is required for every person
Towards the end last week we began speaking about the difference in what we do between OT and NT…
Why is that?
Why don’t we keep the traditional OT passover meal today?
Why don’t we keep the Sabbath?
Why don’t we adhere to dietary restrictions?
The main ones, but then they forget about the rest of the law:
Stoning a rebellious child outside the city
No indoor plumbing, but going outside the city
No certain kinds of meats or clothing
If it were true that we are still required to keep OT law, than NO ONE is doing so…
But isn’t that why there was a NEW testament in the first place?
Hebrews 8:6–13 KJV 1900
6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. 8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: 9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: 11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. 13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
New covenant = better
New covenant = better promises
Old covenant = faulty
The author of the old covenant was not the problem…
The covenant itself was not the problem…
Romans 8:3 KJV 1900
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
The people keeping or not keeping the covenant was the problem…
Since Israel could not keep the old covenant, God made a new one…
Hebrews 8:8 KJV 1900
8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
A covenant of grace instead of law…
Exodus 19:3–8 KJV 1900
3 And Moses went up unto God, and the Lord called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; 4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. 7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord.
That sounds great…
But they won’t keep all those commandments and statutes…
Exodus 24:7–8 KJV 1900
7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient. 8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.
Where is the failure in the first covenant?
Not in God, but in the people who couldn’t keep it…
Note:
When Israel didn’t keep the law, they lost the blessings contained in that law…
As a Christian, when we don’t keep all that God has called us too, we have an advocate in the Father who pleads with Him… the Holy Spirit pleads with you… The blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin… we don’t lose our relationship or benefits with God… They are not conditional… They are given by grace through faith…
**Knowing this - you can understand why some people read through Hebrews or James and come away thinking you can lose your salvation or have to work to get salvation…
If you are saved, you are part of “the church”…
Your relationship with God goes through one man… Jesus Christ
If you are a Jew, your relationship goes through MANY men… “fathers”… the priest, etc.
Important note:
1 Corinthians 10:32 KJV 1900
32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:
God made a distinction between 3 people groups:
Jew (descendants of Abraham)
Gentile (descendants of Adam to the exception of the Jews)
Church (Jew or Gentile saved)
Acts 15:1–11 KJV 1900
1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren (not Jews or Gentiles), and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. 2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. 3 And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren. 4 And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them. 5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. 6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. 7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. 8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
“We never kept the law. If God puts the law on the church, we won’t be able to keep it either.”
“We don’t want to be under the law any longer.”
Hebrews is God telling us that the new testament is so much better than the old…
Galatians 1:6 KJV 1900
6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Galatians 5:1 KJV 1900
1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Peter called the law the “yoke of bondage”

<<<<BACK to Passover

Remember, this is law given to Israel…
Only Israel was to participate in Passover…
Exodus 12:48, says foreigners to Israel could only participate in Passover if they become joined to Israel…
Today, the Jews have 2 New Years:
A Biblical new year (Passover)
A secular new year (Rosh hashanah)
The picture: Death of the lamb without blemish… As the blood was applied to the posts, the death angel would pass over that home. Now, we partake in the Lord’s supper that signifies the body and the blood.
Memorials are important to God:
1 Corinthians 11:24–26 KJV 1900
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

2. The Purpose of Passover

The purpose of the Passover and killing of the pascal lamb was that no one should die...
No one had to die that day...
No one has to die today either...
The only reason anyone died on that 10th and final plague was because they did not obey the Word of God...
Had they gotten their lamb...
Demonstration of modern day Passover:
There is weeks long of preparation for Passover
They search through their homes and remove all leaven (called “Kimetz”)
The night before they have a ceremony where the mother places some crumbs of kimetz in 5-7 places in the home
The youngest participant that year goes through the home with the father looking for the kimetz with a candle
The father follows them with a white feather and a wooden spoon
When he finds the kimetz, the father will sweep up the kimetz and place it in a rag
He will fold the rag and place it outside the home
The next day he will burn the kimetz
Why do they do that?
Zephaniah 1:12 KJV 1900
12 And it shall come to pass at that time, That I will search Jerusalem with candles, And punish the men that are settled on their lees: That say in their heart, The Lord will not do good, neither will he do evil.
They think that if God will search Jerusalem with candles, than they should too...
The fire is the fire of judgement for the leven (Sin)...
They say if you have leven in your home than you have leven in your heart...
1 Corinthians 5:8 KJV 1900
8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Holding leven (sin) in your life will hinder your walk with God...
Exodus 13:7 KJV 1900
7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.
Not in your hands; or
In your homes....
The problem is that a little leven can destroy the entire thing...
1 Corinthians 5:6 KJV 1900
6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
John 2:13–16 KJV 1900
13 And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; 16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.
In Israel they have very large Passover meals...
The stores offer payment plans to pay off the meal...
Interesting note: they don’t have a lamb or anything to resemble the lamb portion of the OT Passover
Reason: Deuteronomy 16:16
Deuteronomy 16:16 KJV 1900
16 Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the Lord empty:
They said the temple was the place of sacrifice and since the temple was destroyed, there is no longer a place of sacrifice...
During the Passover meal, they had a cup on the table...
As part of their ceremony, they would use that cup to wash their hands...
It was supposed to go from the fingertips down to the elbow and they would pour it 3 times...
(This is why they got mad at the apostles for eating with unwashen hands...
** Modern Passover is VERY tradition based
