Intro: We have talked about the being of God, the unique persons of the Trinity, tonight we are going to be looking at the Church.
Hook: Shield of the Trinity. Perichoresis—meaning move around. We’ve explored the complicated nature of what the trinity is and this is the best we’ve gotten on being able to show what’s going on. When we explore the New Testament, we see that there is plenty of evidence of the Trinity. A lot of that even gets put on us. There is an implicit Trinity in Scripture that is then reflected in the Church.
Context: Implicit Trinitarianism structure of the Church. What we mean, is we have talked about how the Trinity exists in perfect community. The Church is a reflection of that community.
I. The People of God
In the OT, God created a people for Himself. In the New Testament, God’s choosing is broadened to Jews and Gentiles within the Church
United by the New Covenant, as the Jewish people were united as God’s under the Old Covenant.
What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,
“I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
A quality of holiness is expected of the people of God. God had always expected Israel to be pure, or sanctified. As Christ’s bride the church must also be holy.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
II. The Body of Christ
The church is how Christ’s activity is accomplished on earth, as it was physically when he walked the earth.
The body of Christ is also an image of the connectiveness of the Church’s people. Jesus is the head and believers are the individual members/parts
Body is to be unified. There are no ethnic and social barriers.
The Church is an extension of His ministry being given authority to evangelize, baptize, and teach.
And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
III. The Temple of the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit imparts His life/power to the church.
Similar to the Body of Christ
There is a unity implemented within the Church, unique to almost any other entity.
There’s an active living structure, it doesn’t stay the same.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Closing: If you can comprehend it, it’s not God. However, all throughout Scripture we have this description of who God is and it all points to the doctrine of the Trinity. It matters because, we are made in the image of God, and we want to reflect Him to those around Us. We want to live set apart, doing the work of Jesus, united and growing by the Holy Spirit.
