Psalm Reading

Psalm 78:49–52 “He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels. He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague. He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham. Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.”

Reading

A Lamp under a Jar
Mark 4:21–25 ESV
And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you. For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”
Old & New Treasures
Matthew 13:51–52 ESV
“Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

A Lamp under a Jar

Mark 4:21 ESV
And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand?
Ferile hearts resemble shining lamps
Hearts and lives should be fruitful
Glorify God, by shining
The Word of God asserting influence within our hearts and lives
Hidden by:
Elaborate Human Traditions
Hypocritical Actions
Jesus points out the absurdity if putting a lamp under a basket/jar or bed instead of on a lampstand
Reminded by Paul in Salutation to Titus:
Objectively given and promised from eternity
Hidden - not fuly realised or understood by the men of the old dispensation
Now fully manifested - by means of universal Gospel-proclamation
Mark 4:22 ESV
For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light.
Men try to cover things up
but this will always be unsucessful
God brings everything out into the open
What is now concealed will be revealed on the day of Judgement
Many think they can get away with their evil thoughts, plans, words and actions
God will expose all of it
Duties of the Citizens of Heaven:
Mark 4:23 ESV
If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”
Previously: He who has ears let him hear
Now: “if anyone has ears to hear, let him hear”
Mark 4:24 ESV
And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.
Attentively
Judiciously - reason and good judgement
With the measure you use, it will be measured to you
Mark 4:25 ESV
For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”
Be Careful
The one who has, more will be given
The one who has not, event what he has will be taken away
God’s Riches
Grace
Pardons Abundantly
Lovingkindness

The True Scribe

Matthew 13:51–52 ESV
“Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”
Scribe - Student and teacher of God’s Word
To acknowledge gratefully that our mind has been enriched is wonderful, but is not enough!
What has been received and understood much be imparted to others
All citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven should aspire to be “The True Scribe” ...
a) He must have received adequate training
in matters regarding The Kingdom of Heaven
Salvation full and free
All are invited to enter
Of Grace and Glory
b) In the eyes of God, this kingdom-scribe is rich and important
A Citizen of the kingdom of heaven is endowed with all the rights and priviledges of citizenship
He is infact the son of the King
c) This implies that he has the responsibility of providing for his household
“Who brings out his treasure”
Opens his treasure store
God provides a rich supply of knowledge of Scripture
The way of salvation
The way of holiness
The peace that passes all understanding
The Joy unspeakable and full of glory
This treasure is imparted first to his household
And then to others
d) He must provide “things new and old”
Scribes were obsessed either with the
Old - unable to stir men’s souls and to meet his deepest needs
New - the latest idea or opinion
The True Scribe
Must be acquainted with both old and builds on it
He applies all to new situations
By God’s Grace, remains ever fresh in his approach, for he drinks from the Fountain of Living Waters
