Like father...like son… or at least in part. David is believed to have written many of the Psalms of Ascent
Today, while historically scholars have debated the authorship of the Psalm, it is fitting that Solomon is deemed the author.
Why? He grew up in the manner to understand the purpose of dependence upon the Lord.
He would have witnessed the Grace of God in his own father’s life.
His own father, a man after God’s Own heart.
So, it is good that in each of these degrees of processioning towards the Lord that we have been reminded of our theme today.
You see, in the last couple of months, we have started the reading each day with the words:
“I cried to the Lord;” “I lift my eyes to the hills;” “Let us go up to the house of the Lord;” “I lift my eyes to You;” “If the Lord had not been on our side;” “Those who trust in the Lord;” “When the Lord restored;”
Notice the reminder in each of our dependence upon one outside of ourselves...our dependence on the Lord.
So as they stepped up to in their spiritual journey...they acknowledged a need for the Lord.
Let’s read our passage for this morning.
A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.
1 Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.
3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth.
5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.
7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
