Main Idea

Immanuel is a significant part of Messianic prophecies.
it highlights God’s presence in the midst of His people.
But its importance is not confined to the time of Isaiah and king Ahaz.
This part of the book of Immanuel highlights God’s presence among His people in future instances.

Main Points

The future Immanuel will have 2 distinct manifestations
The pacification of God’s anger towards Israel
The return of the remnants
A song of thanksgiving

The future Immanuel prophecy

Purpose of the prophecy

To give hope to a humbled people - Isaiah 9.1-5

Isaiah 9:1–5 NASB 2020
1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish. In earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He will make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. 3 You will multiply the nation, You will increase their joy; They will rejoice in Your presence As with the joy of harvest, As people rejoice when they divide the spoils. 4 For You will break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian. 5 For every boot of the marching warrior in the roar of battle, And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
God will break the yoke of their burden - v. 4
God will do this by shining the great light to these people who walk in darkness
this was fulfilled in the earthly ministry of Jesus
His Galilean ministry brought joy to this region of Galilee

A two-fold prophecy

The book of Immanuel has 2 more prophecies concerning Immanuel.
This is contained in the text Isaiah 9.6
Isaiah 9:6 NASB 2020
6 For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

First - a Child is born to us

this points to the coming of Christ through “birth”
the Messiah will be born “to us” the nation of God
this was revealed to Joseph in Matthew 1.20-23
Matthew 1:20–23 NASB 2020
20 But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this took place so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: 23Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name him Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
believed by the people - Luke 7.16-17
Luke 7:16–17 NASB 2020
16 Fear gripped them all, and they began glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has appeared among us!” and, “God has visited His people!” 17 And this report about Him spread throughout Judea and in all the surrounding region.
affirmed by Christ - John 14.9-10
John 14:9–10 NASB 2020
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own, but the Father, as He remains in Me, does His works.

Second - a Son is given to us

this signifies the Christ as the future Heir to the throne of David
“the government will rest on his shoulders” - points to His millennial reign
His name shall be called -
Wonderful Counselor - Jesus as the Rabbi who taught the people doctrine from God
Mighty God - Jesus manifesting the Almighty God ministering to the needs of the people
Eternal Father - Jesus as the source of life eternal
Prince of Peace - Jesus as the One who will give and impose peace to the whole world
His future government - Isa 9.7
Isaiah 9:7 NASB 2020
7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this.
This future Immanuel prophecy is further emphasized in Isaiah 11.1
Isaiah 11:1 NASB 2020
1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.
His characteristics is explained - Isaiah 11.2-5
Isaiah 11:2–5 NASB 2020
2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make decisions by what His ears hear; 4 But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the humble of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. 5 Also righteousness will be the belt around His hips, And faithfulness the belt around His waist.
the Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him
He will judge and rule with righteousness
His peaceful kingdom is described - Isaiah 11.6-10
Isaiah 11:6–10 NASB 2020
6 And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fattened steer will be together; And a little boy will lead them. 7 Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. 9 They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea. 10 Then on that day The nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal flag for the peoples; And His resting place will be glorious.

Important Lessons

Christ is the embodiment of the Immanuel prophecy, as vindicated by the Gospel.
more than that - He is Immanuel: He is God with us!
this truth is not confined to His earthly ministry, but continues to our present time, through the Holy Spirit.
the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ
the Holy Spirit is Christ/God with us
John 14:18 NASB 2020
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.
Matthew 28:20 NASB 2020
20 teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Only Christ can and will fulfill God’s ordained system of government: government that is characterized by righteousness, justice, peace and prosperity.
there has never been a single righteous government since the fall of man, ever.

The pacifying of God’s anger

God’s anger toward Israel (northern kingdom) is again expressed in the following verses - Isaiah 9.8 - 10.4

God’s response to Israel’s sins

God’s anger towards Israel will not be pacified!

Note - 4 times, “His anger is not turned away”
First cycle: Israel’s pride and arrogance - Isaiah 9.8-12
Second cycle: the people did not turn to God - Isaiah 9.13-17
Third cycle: God’s judgments were given - Isaiah 9.18-21
Fourth cycle: injustice continued - Isaiah 10.1-4

God’s response to Assyria sins

Isaiah 10.5-19
First sin - Isaiah 10.5-7
Isaiah 10:5–7 NASB 2020
5 Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger And the staff in whose hands is My indignation, 6 I send it against a godless nation And commission it against the people of My fury To capture spoils and to seize plunder, And to trample them down like mud in the streets. 7 Yet it does not so intend, Nor does it plan so in its heart, But rather it is its purpose to destroy And to eliminate many nations.
God’s response - Isaiah 10.12
Isaiah 10:12 NASB 2020
12 So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say,I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the arrogant pride of his eyes.”
Second sin - Isaiah 10.13-15
Isaiah 10:13–15 NASB 2020
13 For he has said, “By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this, Because I have understanding; And I removed the boundaries of the peoples And plundered their treasures, And like a powerful man I brought down their inhabitants, 14 And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a nest, And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; And there was not one that flapped its wing, opened its beak, or chirped.” 15 Is the axe to boast itself over the one who chops with it? Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it? That would be like a club wielding those who lift it, Or like a rod lifting the one who is not wood.
God’s response - Isaiah 10.16-19
Isaiah 10:16–19 NASB 2020
16 Therefore the Lord, the God of armies, will send a wasting disease among his stout warriors; And under his glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame. 17 And the Light of Israel will become a fire and Israel’s Holy One a flame, And it will burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a single day. 18 And He will destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body, And it will be as when a sick person wastes away. 19 And the rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number That a child could write them down.

Important lessons

God’s unquenchable anger against reflects the judgment that God will give to unrepentant sinners on Judgment Day.
there is nothing that wi be sufficient to appease God’s wrath because the world has spurned and rejected His Provision for sin - the death of Christ on the cross.
On the other hand, God’s anger towards Jerusalem will have an end -
Isaiah 10:23–24 NASB 2020
23 For a complete destruction, one that is determined, the Lord God of armies will execute in the midst of the whole land. 24 Therefore this is what the Lord God of armies says: “My people, you who dwell in Zion, do not fear the Assyrian who strikes you with the rod, and lifts up his staff against you the way Egypt did.
this is anger that is not intended for destruction
this is anger that intended for correction so that God’s purpose and plan will be accomplished
Isaiah 54:7–8 NASB 2020
7 “For a brief moment I abandoned you, But with great compassion I will gather you. 8 “In an outburst of anger I hid My face from you for a moment, But with everlasting favor I will have compassion on you,” Says the Lord your Redeemer.

The return of the remnants

There two prophecies concerning the return of the remnants -
first - Isaiah 10.20—31
second - Isaiah 11.11-16

First return of remnants

The prophecy - Isaiah 10.20-22

Isaiah 10:20–22 NASB 2020
20 Now on that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will no longer rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22 For though your people, Israel, may be like the sand of the sea, Only a remnant within them will return; A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

Significance of this prophecy

The remnants are the few Israelites who were divinely left to survive the destruction as
a sign of His returning favor.
a sign of His continuing faithfulness to the covenant
a sign of His continuing work
This prophecy points to a future time, when the 10 tribes who were scattered abroad will return to the land
this is what happened in the 20th century with the formation of the nation Israel.

Second return of remnants

The prophecy - Isaiah 11.11-13

Isaiah 11:11–13 NASB 2020
11 Then it will happen on that day that the Lord Will again recover with His hand the second time The remnant of His people who will remain, From Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, And from the islands of the sea. 12 And He will lift up a flag for the nations And assemble the banished ones of Israel, And will gather the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth. 13 Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, And those who harass Judah will be eliminated; Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, And Judah will not harass Ephraim.

Significance of the returning remnants

The remnants will come from both Judah and Israel
God is no longer dealing with them separately
in the kingdom of Christ there is no northern and douthern kingdoms
The remnants will gather around the flag
that flag what Christ!
This prophecy points to the gathering of the “elect Jews” at the second coming of Christ - Matthew 24.29-31
Matthew 24:29–31 NASB 2020
29 “But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the son of man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. 31 And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet blast, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.
see also Deuteronomy 30.1-4

Important lessons

Theologically speaking, we cannot deny that there is a restoration work of God in the last days concerning the nation Israel.
it is a national as well as a spiritual restoration
it is part of the gospel of Christ - see Romans 11
When a person has had a genuine relationship/covenant with God, GOD WILL RESTORE THAT PERSON BACK TO HIM!
God is able
God is obligated by His faithfulness
The New Covenant is God’s ultimate solution to man’s recurring problem of sin and disobedience!
God seals the believer with His Holy Spirit - so that He will not be lost again, or wander away again from Him!
God writes His Word in the person’s heart - so that His WILL is forever etched in the person’s heart and never forget the covenant!

A song of thanksgiving

Isaiah 12 is a song of thanksgiving

Reasons to thank God

His anger was turned away - Isaiah 12.1
Isaiah 12:1 NASB 2020
1 Then you will say on that day, “I will give thanks to You, Lord; For although You were angry with me, Your anger is turned away, And You comfort me.
The LORD has become their salvation - Isaiah 12.2 -3
Isaiah 12:2–3 NASB 2020
2 “Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For the Lord God is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.” 3 Therefore you will joyously draw water From the springs of salvation.
The LORD has done glorious things - Isaiah 12.4-6
Isaiah 12:4–6 NASB 2020
4 And on that day you will say, “Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name. Make known His deeds among the peoples; Make them remember that His name is exalted.” 5 Praise the Lord in song, for He has done glorious things; Let this be known throughout the earth. 6 Rejoice and shout for joy, you inhabitant of Zion, For great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.
The song and the book of Immanuel ends with a powerful truth -
GREAT IN YOUR MIDST IS THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL!
GREAT IS THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL IN YOUR MIDST!

Conclusion

The book of Immanuel (Isaiah 7-12) sums up the proactive involvement and participation of God in the life of His people.
