Colossians 3:12-4:1 - From the Heart

ハッピーサンクスギビング！日本では勤労感謝の日ですね。この特別な祝日は、大切な質問について考える機会を与えてくれます。それは、感謝の心と神様が私たちに与えてくださった働きの関係は何でしょうか。
不平不満が祝福を明らかにする時
今年何に感謝しているかを尋ねる前に、まずこう考えてみてください。あなたが一番不平を言うことは何ですか？おそらく時間、人間関係、健康、お金、物、または仕事についてでしょう。では、あなたが感謝していることは何ですか？何か面白いことに気づきませんか？私たちが不平を言うことは、しばしば感謝していることと同じなのです。お金が足りないと言いながら、持っているお金に感謝します。仕事について不平を言いながら、仕事があることに感謝します。この矛盾は、人間の性質について、そして神様が与えてくださった賜物について、何か大切なことを教えてくれます。
三回：感謝しなさい
コロサイ人への手紙3章15-17節で、使徒パウロは、わずか三節の中で感謝について三回強調しています。聖書が何かをこれほど頻繁に繰り返す時、それは重要だというサインです。見逃してはいけません。パウロはこう書いています。「キリストの平和があなたがたの心を支配するようにしなさい...感謝する者となりなさい。キリストのことばを、あなたがたのうちに豊かに住まわせ...感謝をもって心から神に向かって歌いなさい。あなたがたのすることは、何であっても...主イエスの名によって行い、主によって父なる神に感謝しなさい。」
感謝は、クリスチャン生活への単なる良い追加ではありません。キリストと共に歩むことの中心なのです。この感謝の態度は、私たちの霊的生活の三つの重要な領域に影響を与えます。
感謝が私たちを変える方法
感謝は平安をもたらします。 関係の中に感謝がない時、平安も消えてしまいます。これは神様との関係においても同じです。主の私たちへの恵みに感謝する時、特別な平安が心に入ってきます。人生は思っているほど悪くない、神様が私たちを支えてくださっている、そして神様がすでにしてくださったことのゆえに信頼できると認識します。
感謝は神様のみことばを覚えるのを助けます。 主が私たちにしてくださったことへの感謝の態度を失う時、神様の祝福、愛、約束を忘れ始めます。感謝は、神様の真実さを心に新鮮に保ち、みことばが私たちの内に豊かに住むのを助けます。
感謝は神様のみこころを明らかにします。 パウロは、感謝をささげながら、すべてのことをイエスの名によって行うように教えています。主のことを心に留めるのをやめて、自分の願いだけに集中し始める時、私たちの人生における神様の目的を見失います。感謝は、神様が私たちを通して成し遂げたいことに向けて、私たちを正しい方向に保ちます。
主のために心から働く
パウロは、これらの原則をコロサイ3章23-24節で仕事に直接適用しています。「何をするにも、人に対してではなく、主に対してするように、心から行いなさい。あなたがたは、報いとして、主から相続財産を受け継ぐことを知っています。あなたがたは主キリストに仕えているのです。」
心から働くとは、心の底から働くことです。これは願いと動機の座からです。これは雇用だけでなく、神様があなたの手に置かれたすべてのことに当てはまります。勉強、家事、介護、管理、その他どんな責任でもです。すべての請求書、すべての書類、すべての仕事は、人間の上司のためでも、自分自身のためでもなく、イエス様のために、心からすることができます。
主はあなたの働きと態度を見ておられます。あなたが主に目を向けながら困難な時を乗り越える時、主は気づいておられます。主は、主に捧げられた忠実な奉仕に対して報いてくださいます。
イエス様の模範に従う

この感謝祭への挑戦
次に何かについて不平を言いそうになる時、立ち止まって尋ねてください。これは実際に神様に感謝すべきことではないだろうか、と。主は、この世界で生き延び、生活するために必要なものであなたを祝福してくださいました。主は、人間関係、健康、そして主があなたに行うように召されたことを成し遂げるための資源を与えてくださいました。
主があなたの手に置かれたことが何であっても、心からそれを行い、主のためにそれを行い、感謝をもってそれを行いましょう。
Happy Thanksgiving! Or as we say in Japan, Happy Labor Thanksgiving Day. This unique holiday gives us an opportunity to consider an important question: What is the relationship between thankfulness and the work God has given us to do?
When Complaints Reveal Our Blessings
Before asking what you're thankful for this year, consider first: What do you complain about most? Perhaps it's time, relationships, health, money, possessions, or work. Now think about what you're grateful for. Notice something interesting? The things we complain about are often the very same things we're thankful for. We say we don't have enough money, yet we're grateful for the money we do have. We complain about our jobs, yet we're thankful to be employed. This contradiction reveals something important about human nature—and about the gifts God has given us.
Three Times: Be Thankful
In Colossians 3:15-17, the Apostle Paul emphasizes thankfulness three times in just three verses. When Scripture repeats something this frequently, it signals importance—don't miss this. Paul writes: "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts...and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly...with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do...do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
Thankfulness is not merely a nice addition to the Christian life; it is central to walking with Christ. This grateful attitude influences three critical areas of our spiritual lives.
How Thankfulness Transforms Us
Thankfulness brings peace. When gratitude is absent from a relationship, peace disappears as well. The same is true in our relationship with God. When we thank the Lord for His goodness toward us, a special peace enters our hearts. We recognize that life isn't as bad as it seems, that God has our back, and that we can trust Him because of what He has already done.
Thankfulness helps us remember God's Word. When we lose our grateful attitude toward what the Lord has done for us, we begin to forget His blessings, His love, and His promises. Gratitude keeps God's faithfulness fresh in our minds and helps His Word dwell richly within us.
Thankfulness clarifies God's will. Paul instructs us to do everything in Jesus' name while giving thanks. When we stop keeping the Lord in mind and start focusing only on our own desires, we lose sight of His purposes for our lives. Thankfulness keeps us oriented toward what He wants to accomplish through us.
Working Heartily for the Lord
Paul applies these principles directly to work in Colossians 3:23-24: "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."
To work heartily means to work from the heart—from the seat of your desire and motivation. This applies not only to employment but to whatever God has placed in your hands: studies, homemaking, caregiving, management, or any other responsibility. Every invoice, every form, every task can be done from the heart for Jesus, not for any human supervisor or even for ourselves.
The Lord sees your work and your attitude. When you push through difficult times with your eyes on Him, He notices. He will reward you for faithful service rendered to Him.
Following Jesus' Example
Jesus modeled this perfectly. He said, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work" (John 4:34). The Father's will was His driving motivation. Even facing the cross, Jesus prayed, "Not my will, but yours be done." Because Jesus faithfully accomplished the Father's work, He went to the cross, took our sins upon Himself, died in our place, and rose from the grave.
He now calls us, in our new relationship with Him through faith, to walk in the same way—to do whatever He places before us with all our hearts, for Him.
A Challenge for This Thanksgiving
The next time you find yourself complaining about something, pause and ask: Is this something I should actually be thanking God for? The Lord has blessed you with what you need to survive and live in this world. He has given you relationships, health, and the resources to accomplish what He has called you to do.
Whatever the Lord has put into your hands to do, do it from your heart, do it for Him, and do it with thanksgiving.
