THE CERTAINTY OF THE PROMISE
Numbers 23:19 NKJV
19 “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
There are over 3,000 promises in the Word of God.
These promises are for the child of God to enjoy.
You can trust in the promises of God, because God is trustworthy.
God is not a man that He should lie.
Man may not keep his word, but God will always keep His Word.
If God said it, it will come to pass.
THE PROVISION IS ALREADY IN THE PROMISE (2 Corinthians 1:20; 2 Peter 1:3-4)
2 Corinthians 1:20 NKJV
20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.
2 Peter 1:3–4 NKJV
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
The promises of God are “Yes” and “Amen” in Christ Jesus.
We have “exceeding great and precious promises” by the knowledge of “Him”.
But I believe that too many Christians are living below their Kingdom privileges.
They are not living the abundant life that God wants them to have because they are not correctly appropriating and applying the promises of God in their lives.
As a Christian, the promises of God should be so engrained in you that whatever situation you face and whatever life throws your way, you have so appropriated the promises of God and applied them to your life that you can stand on them whenever you need them.
You don’t need to wait until you get in the middle of a mess to try to find out what the promises of God are for your life.
Ask yourself this question. If economic collapse were to hit this world tomorrow and you found yourself without a paycheck and Walmart shut their doors what would you do?
Would you be one of those who will be standing on the promises of God or will you be one of those running around saying “What in the world are we going to do?” “We’re gonna have to find some of those people that’s got the hoarded up groceries!”
But those who are standing on the promises of God will be ok because they know the Word of God says “I was young and now I’m old and I’ve never seen the righteous forsaken, nor His seed begging bread.”
You’ll have what you need, not because you trusted in a bunker full of 30-year old pork-and-beans, but you’ll have what you need because you trusted in the Lord and you’re standing on the promises of God!
There are basically two groups of Christians. There are those (1) who are standing on the promises of God because they have properly appropriated them and applied them to their lives (in other words they have taken possession of the promises) and then there are those (2) who may know about the promises of God but because they either don’t think they need them or have not learned how to possess them they miss out on abundant life that God wants them to have.
Many Christians are like the Church of Laodicea in Revelation which said “we are rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing.”
Many Christians today don’t think they need the promises of God or they only come to God when crisis hits. But as soon as the crisis is gone, they forget about God.
Oh in the middle of the crisis they’ll come to church every time the door is open and they read their Bible like a maniac, but as soon as the promise comes and the blessings start flowing, they suddenly don’t have time for God anymore.
And then they wonder why that some problem comes back or something worse happens.
Those people are actually living beneath their privileges as a child of God because they have not learned how to possess the promises of God.
Understand this, Jesus did not die on the Cross, for you to play around in the kiddie pool of promises. He wants to take you to waters to swim in.
POSSESSING THE PROMISE (Joshua 1:2-3)
Joshua 1:2–3 NKJV
2 “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.
When the Israelites went into the Promised Land God said He had “given” them the land (the promise) but they did not take “possession” of the land (the promise) until they actually set foot on it. God said wherever the sole of your foot touches, it’s yours. They had to literally “stand” on the promise.
The promises of God are the same way. The Bible is full of the promises of God. God has already given you His promise. And the provision is already in the promise. But until you know how and are willing to apply them and stand on them you will never possess them.
The first thing you have to understand is that there are two basic types of promises in the Word of God (1) unconditional promises and (2) conditional promises.
Unconditional promises are promises that God said He will do no matter if you accept them or want them. Example: rainbows.
Conditional promises are promises that God says He will give, IF you meet the condition. In other words, there is something you must do in order for the promise to apply to your life. Examples:
2 Chronicles 7:14 NKJV
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
You want God to “open up the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that you cannot contain.” But are you willing to meet the condition of Micah 3:8-10: “stop robbing from God and bring you tithes and offerings into the storehouse.” We want to claim the blessings but are we willing to meet the conditions?
You can’t wear your tithe to church and expect God to bless it.
You can’t drive you tithe to church and expect God to bless it.
You can’t give you tithe to Walt Disney and expect the blessings of God.
You can’t show up on Sunday morning and haven’t so much as cracked open your Bible or bowed your knees in prayer since last Sunday morning and expect God to just pour you out all of His promises.
It is going to take…wait for it…commitment.
All of the promises of God are available to you. The provision is already in the promise. But in order to claim the promise, you are going to commit yourself to meeting the condition.
God has given you His promises not as some “if you do good you’ll get rewarded” program. God has given you His promises to lead you to a covenant relationship with Him. God is wanting to know “will you trust Me, will you obey Me.”
Abraham and Sarah waiting 25 years for the promised son. Are you willing to stay committed to the promises of God until you see them fulfilled?
Russell K. Carter – star athlete; ordained Methodist minister; accomplished musician. At 30 years old he was diagnosed with a chronic heart condition. He decided to fully consecrate his life to Christ and began to study God’s Word and the promises of God. God miraculously healed him and he lived another 40 years. But during the time that he was sick and didn’t know if he was going to live or die, before he received the promise, he penned the words to this song: (read the words to “Standing on the Promises of God”)
