Every generation of God’s people has handed the baton of praise to the next. We have picked up the baton from our parents’ and grandparents’ generation. There is an unbroken song of worship and adoration that goes back to the beginning of time. Now, it is our turn to praise God and teach our children to praise him. One reason we have been saved is so that we can spend our lives teaching the next generation how good God is. One of the best things we can do for the next generation is meditate on God’s goodness and share his goodness with them.

Christianity in America has DECLINED
Thankfully, the declined seems to have leveled off
But it has declined
Number of Americans who identify as Christians (https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2025/02/26/decline-of-christianity-in-the-us-has-slowed-may-have-leveled-off/)
In 2007 - 78%
Today - 62%
Down 16 percentage points in 18 years
The pattern of religious decline in a country (https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/09/02/how-religion-declines-around-the-world/)
People participate in worship services less often.
The importance of religion declines in their personal lives.
Belonging to religion becomes less common.
Concerning
56% of parents DO NOT pray or read scripture with their children
74% of parents DO NOT attend religious services weekly
could a 3,000 year old song help us reverse that trend?
Psalm 145
Psalm of David
Talmud says if you want to have a place in the world to come, you should recite this psalm
So, Orthodox Jews recite this psalm 3 times a day in prayer
Psalm 145:1–3 ESV
1 I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. 2 Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever. 3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.
Psalm 145 is an acrostic poem
Each of these verses correspond to the first three letters of the Hebrew alphabet
helps with memorization
complete and total praise for God, the whole of Hebrew language used to praise him
Psalm 145:4–7 ESV
4 One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. 5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. 6 They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness. 7 They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
This is the cycle we are all a part of
having God’s works commended (praise) to us
commending (praising) them to the next generation
if the next generation doesn’t know how awesome God is, that’s on us!
What are we to do…
meditate on his wondrous works
speak of the might of his awesome deeds
declare his greatness
pour forth the fame his abundant goodness
sing aloud of his righteousness
NOT just about passing on information
It’s about passing on enthusiasm for the Lord
Moms and dads, when is the last time you let your kids see your enthusiasm for the Lord?
Psalm 145:8–9 ESV
8 The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.
Most quoted verse in the Bible: Exodus 34:6-7
Gracious
Merciful
Slow to Anger
Abounding in steadfast love
This may not have been the picture you received from God
But it is the picture God gives of himself
It is the one we are responsible for sharing with the next generation
Psalm 145:10–12 ESV
10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord, and all your saints shall bless you! 11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power, 12 to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

Our Job…
speak of the glory of your kingdom
tell of your power
make known to the children…mighty deeds and splendor of your kingdom
Psalm 145:13–14 ESV
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. The Lord is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works. 14 The Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.
Psalm 145:15–17 ESV
15 The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. 16 You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works.
Psalm 145:18–20 ESV
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. 19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them. 20 The Lord preserves all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.
Are you so enthusiastically passionate about the character and conduct of God
you can’t help but talk about them
you can’t help but sing
you can’t help but share it with the next generation
Psalm 145:21 ESV
21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
You are purified to passionately praise the Lord!
The next generation needs to SEE and HEAR your passionate praise, because…

We pass on what we’re passionate about.

We can’t guarantee that
Our children follow Jesus
But we can guarantee they see our passion for following him.
You can’t control what your children do
you can control what you SHOW them
you can control what you TELL them
