This morning we have had the opportunity to share what we are thankful for in one or two words
Then we get to go and have a thanksgiving lunch as a church family
This week you will spend time with family and friends during this thanksgiving holiday
We are to be thankful people
Let me clear church we have so much to be thankful for
See last week we looked at the arrest and death of Jesus
It is only by the beating of Jesus we are healed
Isaiah 53:5 NASB95
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
We have talked about the beating of Jesus and how He took our place
How that is what we deserved just like the thief's on the cross
And just like the thief on the cross who recognized his own sin and then understood that Jesus was innocent
We must understand that its our own sin that separates us from God
And that Jesus willingly took my own place on the cross
If you will recall from last week as we looked at the death of Jesus
It paid our debt of sin
See church you must understand sin
Sin is the bad stuff you do
And because of that sin you deserve death
Romans 5:12 NASB95
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
Sin came into the world through Adam
We are born with a sin nature
I know at this point it doesn’t sound like much to be thankful for
but the story isn't over
We are sinners and deserve to be punished
Jesus took that punishment Himself on the cross
Jesus died and His blood washes us and makes us clean
It is through the death of Jesus that we have been made right with Jesus
We can be thankful for the death and sacrifice of Jesus that pays our debt of sin
We are debt free if we are willing to repent of our sin and trust in Jesus
Now here is when we really get excited
As if the debt free of sin isn’t enough
Luke 23:53 NASB95
53 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain.
This is where we sort of left off last week
Jesus had died
We know that He was buried in a brand new tomb
Because of the talk around his death and how he would come back to life
Matthew 27:64–66 NASB95
64 “Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.
They seal up the grave and posted guards outside the tomb so no one would be able to come and steal the body of Jesus
They believed that his followers might come and steal the body away and hide it somewhere
Which leads us to one of the greatest if not the most greatest point in scripture
The resurrection of Christ
If Christ remains dead then He is just a really good man
If Christ remains in the grave then we have no life and really no payment of sin because there was no perfect sacrifice because He aint God and is just a man and men are not perfect
Mark 16:1–6 NASB95
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large. 5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.
Again you need to go and read through the Gospels
I like the account in Mark because you see the conversation walking to the grave
The ladies fully understand they have buried a dead man
They fully expect Him Jesus to still be in the grave
As would we if we are being Honest
They are trying to figure out who will roll the stone away because just a few days ago they watched Jesus’s body being laid in the tomb and the stone rolled in front of it
They come up just over the hill or around the corner and see the stone rolled away
Confused and probably curious they peak inside because again the tomb is supposed to be sealed up
They see a man in one of the other Gospels it says he was wearing dazzling clothes
He says to the women
You are looking for Jesus He is not here He has risen
Why would we be looking for Jesus in the grave
Dead men are in graves
Alive men are not in graves
Jesus is alive
This forever changes things because death could not hold Jesus
Which once again proves that He is the son of God
Because Jesus not has forever defeated death
Colossians 2:12–14 NASB95
12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Jesus’s death means that we are no longer slaves to sin, Jesus paid our debt of sin
Jesus’s resurrection means that we can have life
We are no hindered by death
Death does not rule over us
Jesus’s resurrection completes the sacrifice
Jesus took the old sacrificial system and got ride of it with His resurrection
Does that make sense that you and I no longer have to be hindered by sin because Jesus died for our sin and came back to life utterly defeating death
Death no longer has control over you and I
So now what
If his death paid our debt of sin and gave us freedom from sin
Then His life church does just that gives us life
John 10:10 NASB95
10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
Jesus came to give you and I live and to have it abundantly
We can be thankful for that
That because of Christ we can have life
Our debt of sin was paid by His death and church His resurrection we now have life
Please hear me
IT does not say perfect easy life
IT does say you will have life in Christ
Which means outside of Christ there is only death
Jesus isn’t an option to life
It is Jesus and you get life or without Jesus you get death
Jesus’s death and resurrection were to set us free and give us life
Church you have been set free because of Christ
But understand you have stake in the relationship with Christ
Jesus didn’t die and come back to life so you could have fire insurance
Which means that we are to take advantage of our new life and freedom with have in Christ not to
That is why Jesus defeated death to give dead people life so they would use it for His glory
Galatians 5:13 NASB95
13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
The resurrection of Christ is not just an awesome event or amazing thing
It is
But Church the fact that Jesus is alives means that we are alive and should use that for His own glory and to be obedient to what He has called us to do
Just like the women and apostles are forever changed because of the resurrection we are as well
That death no longer has a hold on you and I
We can step into the grace and mercy that Jesus gives us through His resurrection
We know that after Jesus arose from the grave He was observed by the 11 in the upper room
We know that the 2 on the road to Emaus
We know that the disciples fishing had breakfest with Jesus
That as Jesus ascended into heaven over 500 witnesses witnessed this
Church the resurrection happened
We know that the stone was rolled away not so Jesus could get out
But so we could look in and see
Alive men on not in the tomb
Because of the empty tomb and the resurrection of Jesus
We can shout
1 Corinthians 15:55–57 NASB95
55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Of death you have no victory
Death you have no lasting sting
It is Christ who sets us free by His death and resurrection through Christ Jesus
That is why the resurrection is so vital and important
It is not just another Sunday
It is not just another day
It is not just another Bible account that we skim over
But because of the resurrection we are forever changed or we can be
But because of the resurrection we can cry out to a living breathing God and He will hear us and save us
Acts 2:21 NASB95
21And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
We know that because Jesus is alive we can call on Him and be saved
This morning as we come to a close the band will be coming up
We invite you to do business with Jesus this morning
Maybe this morning you have never called on Jesus to be saved
Because of the resurrection you can do that this morning
There will be people at the front you are invited to talk to about salvation
Or maybe this morning you already have a personal relationship with Jesus
Maybe you need to step into the life that you already have in Christ
Maybe you need to just spend time in prayer
maybe there is another decsion to join this church this moring
