1. Corinth 5:9-6:11. Who are we to associate with? - “And such were some of you”!
Paul corrects a misunderstanding (And addresses who to Judge)
Paul shames the Corinthians – for Lawsuits in the fellowship and – lack of wisdom to Judge.
Paul addresses: Who will not inhering the kingdom of God - and who will.
Paul continues to explain and clarify, (I wrote to you, don’t associate with sexual immoral meant the ones in the word, or you would have to go out of this world) -What I meant was not to associate with the people that bear the name of brother, - if they are: Sexual immoral, greedy, idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler not event to eat with such a one. – (Purge out false brothers, - and evil). From last week it was not only about the one man that sinned greatly, it is about: what people clam to be if they are not walking in the way of Jesus. Sexual immoral, - Sexual activity outside marriage one man one woman. Greedy – if a person is consumed/focused on greed and being greedy, they are not acting like Jesus Christ, who was very generous giving himself. A person that worship idols (real ones and fake sports teams etc.). Can’t have Jesus as Lord if the idol is what drives the person, - that person will spread false “teaching/behavior” fellowship – the same with the greedy person. A person that is a reviler that uses words to control, hurt, attack, slander – using words to destroy others should not be encouraged in the behavior, but be excluded from fellowship. A long with drunkards, people that excessive drinking – God has become a drink, and alcohol controls the person. /Wisdom we are not to endorse destructive behavior and sin, but call people to repent. Swindler, - robber, that steal and to enrich themselves, also don’t seem to have Jesus as Lord, and should repent form their sin of stealing and greed. -Don’t have fellowship with them, do eat with them if they say they are brothers.
Verse 12 is a verse not cited by people often, and when done the 2 part is not cited, Paul asks the question, why should I judge the people outside the fellowship? That is not my job, or mission. No, that is God’s job. We are to judge the people in the fellowship, and purge the evil person from the fellowship. For their good (they might repent and surrender to Jesus) and for the fellowships good, the building up of the body in Christ growing. Cleansing out/purge (OT Death refences) the evil, that try to get in and destroy, and create division, cleans it out of the fellowship.
As Paul continue in chapter 6; we can se why this is so important to cleans out the evil, because Paul now addresses lawsuits among the believers, if evil is not cleansed out the fellowship, it will be open to abuse and swindlers. Don’t have people that clam the name and don’t live like it – discipline is also saying, live like a new lump – not the old, repent, follow Jesus, not yourself. (Paul knows this is an important to the fellowships survival, it can be taken down by evil, and destroyed, by sin and devil).
Paul also calls them to account: is there no one in the fellowship that is wise and competent in Jesus Christ to be able to settle the disputes among the fellowship? (It is quit the contrast to we are wise, to oh we can’t settle disputes, we need the world judges to do that). PPT comment.
Paul will again, again, again, point them to the spiritual truth that they (the saints holy ones) are going to judge the world, then why are you incompetent to try trivial cases? (You will judge the world and all the actions done by it – but you can’t settle simple cases among you? You are failing to understand who you are in Christ Jesus – you are even to judge angles – why then can’t you judge cases in this life?
Why do you lay the cases before people of the world if you are to judge the world and angels?
5-10 is a very strong rebuke, and a call to be more like Jesus that the world, - 5 Is there no one wise enough among the fellowship to settle a dispute between the brothers? – Instead of settling the case you go before the unbelievers and try one another, this is a shame. Note. And a defeat that you have lawsuits at all in the fellowship, what is going on? It is not good. 7. And what if you acted more like Jesus, if you were wronged forgive as Christ forgave you, - Paul way of saying it, why not rater be defrauded and suffer wrong that, going to court and slandering the name of Jesus, instead of acting like him? But you do the opposite you wrong you defraud even your own family members. (Stop acting like this).
Paul calling their attention to who will not inherit the kingdom of God, - sexually immoral, Idolaters, nor adulterers, men who practice homosexuality, thieves, greedy, drunkards’ revilers, swindlers – they will not inherit the kingdom of God… - (homosexuality and adulteress it added to the list from above likely because this is issues that are in the church fellowship, sexual sin in many forms that are accepted in the culture that they lived in – but Paul is clear stop that behavior).
Everyone in culture will now be greatly offended, you might be to – I know this person, and so on… This text seems very clear, Paul lists all the people that will not inherit the kingdom of God, - not the world but God’s kingdom.
What who then can be saved? And cleansed, - Paul points to the very fact that they have been changed by Jesus, how, in verse 12 And such were some of you.
But that is not the point the point is that you were washed, sanctified, justified in the name of Lord Jesus Christ by the Spirt of God.
Paul writing; I know that you have been changed, many of you were deep in sin and shame, full of dirt very unworthy of God, with nothing to stand before God, no good deeds, no righteousness, not holy. That all changed as you understood and put your hope and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, - he cleansed you by his blood, his life, his atoning death, God send Jesus that you might be free from sin, and to cleans you from all your unrighteousness and sin, to clean you, to make you holy to sanctify you, and that you can stand justified before God because of the Lord Jesus Christ life and work. And you are by God’s grace and the Holy Spirt able to stand in Jesus Christ the Lord.
You are not all this – but this is who you are in the Lord Jesus Christ – look up – remember – what Jesus Christ has done.
