BBN: James 1

V1

James is the brother of Jesus

Matthew 13:55

Galatians 1:18–19

He is an elder in Jerusalem

Acts 15:13–22

He refers to himself as a bond-servant of Jesus

Which is a strange thing to say as his brother, who doubted Jesus before

John 7:3-5

But also shows that even as an elder he refers to himself as a bond-servant

James is addressing this letter to the scattered tribes of Isreal

Historically Jewish believers were persecuted and many were scattered abroad the Roman empire in around 40 A.D. during the reign of Herod

Now the implication is that James is writing to Jewish believers

Because the counsel discussing the Jew Gentile distinction in Acts 15:13-22 (Of which James made the final judgement) took place in APX 49 A.D

And this letter was written in APX 47 A.D.

With the historical context in mind

It really puts this verse into perspective

So regardless of our trials (Not nearly as bad as what the first believers went through)

We should be joyful in the middle of our sufferings and trials

Why?

When our faith, and our trust in the Lord is tested

It produces endurance (Or perseverance)

Just like when we work our muscles, they grow stronger as we stress them.

Sinless perfectionism??

Is this process completed here on earth?

Or when we are restored in heaven?
