Building Blocks Remembrance
Building Blocks Remembrance
How many of you have forgotten something recently?
Let’s try something tonight. I want you to finish the lyric.
Sleigh bells ring
Are you listening
Joy to the world the Lord has come
Let earth receive her King
Silent Night, Holy Night
All is calm, All is bright
Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa la la la la, la la la la
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play
There are things we remember, because we’ve dealt with them over and over again.
We remember these even though they are seasonal
We remember them because they are ingrained in us.
Scripture is full of reminders.
16 “So the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”
The Rainbow is a reminder
7 Then Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, “To your seed I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to Yahweh who had appeared to him.
Altar as a reminder
11 “And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you.
Circumcision
Land, Seed, and Blessing
The feasts are reminders:
17 ‘You shall also keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; therefore you shall keep this day throughout your generations as a perpetual statute.
As a perpetual state of what?
Remembering who God is and what God has done
38 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue.
39 “And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of Yahweh, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, 40 so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God.
Tassels with a cord of blue, to remember the commandments of Yahweh, to remember to be in fellowship with Him.
8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of Yahweh your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female slave or your cattle or your sojourner who is within your gates.
11 “For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
We remember creation
We could go on and on
Story after story:
Setup an altar and prayed
Public proclamation of God
Means of reminder
The Altars
The Sacrifices
The Feasts
The Songs
The Tabernacle
The Temple
The Law itself!
These are to remind Israel who God is, what He has done, and what He will do!
One of the greatest practices of wisdom in the Old Testament is to set up reminders.
In the New Testament, this is not forgotten, but carried forward.
We recognize things like Advent, Easter, and Christmas by means of reminder.
But there are two consistent reminders in the life of the believer
The study of Scripture (Personal)
We don’t study Scripture because we’ve forgotten the stories, or we’ve forgotten the gist.
We study because like all other information we remember, we access it when we need it.
9 So Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, “At the end of every seven years, at the time of the year of the remission of debts, at the Feast of Booths,
11 when all Israel comes to appear before Yahweh your God at the place which He will choose, you shall read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing. 12 “Assemble the people, the men and the women and little ones and the sojourner who is within your gates, so that they may hear and so that they may learn and fear Yahweh your God and be careful to do all the words of this law.
13 “And their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear Yahweh your God, all the days you live on the land which you are about to cross the Jordan to possess.”
This law is the Torah, the Scriptures!
1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles,
The Lord’s Table (Corporate)
We remember the centrality of it all
God’s love manifested in grace through Jesus His Son.
Furthermore, the practice of this is to be in remembrance of Jesus.
“Do this in remembrance of Me.”
Takeaways:
What reminders can you establish?
2. Reminders take practice
What I mean by this is we won’t simply see the reminder and remember if we’re used to it.
This is why the Lord’s Table is prescribed as a practice!
So how do we practice?
I’ll take you back to our first 5th Sunday Service this year:
Practice
Respond
Command
Content
Examine
Confession
Participate
This is corporate
This extends beyond right now
As the ushers come forward, please take this time to respond to the Lord. To remember His faithfulness, and to confess your sins to Him.
Please hold and then we will participate together.
19 And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”
20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
1 Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. 2 Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.
