The Lukewarm Church

1. Youth Lesson Outline: “Don’t Be Lukewarm”
Lesson Goal
Help students understand what Jesus meant when He called the Laodicean church “lukewarm,” and challenge them to pursue an authentic, passionate relationship with Him.
Opening Icebreaker (5 minutes)
“Hot, Cold, or Lukewarm?” Show different foods/drinks on slides or say them aloud (pizza, coffee, soda, fries). Ask: Which should be hot? Cold? Which is nasty when it’s lukewarm?
Transition: “Jesus uses this exact idea to call out a church that was spiritually ‘blah.’”
Scripture Reading (2 minutes)
Revelation 3:14–22 NLT
“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen—the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s new creation: “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference. “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne. “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.”
Highlight key verses: 15–16, 17, 20.
Historical Context (5 minutes)
Explain three things:
— they didn’t think they needed help.Laodicea was rich
— piped in from miles away.Their water was lukewarm
were famous — Jesus flips these symbols on them.Their black wool & eye salve
Main Teaching (15 minutes)
1. Lukewarm = Comfortable + Uncommitted
Not cold (rejecting Jesus)
Not hot (on fire for Jesus)
Just... meh.
Ask: “How does a student become lukewarm today?” • No time for Jesus • Prayer only in emergencies • Living for approval • Christian label without Christian life
Luke 9:23–24 NLT
Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.
2. The Danger of Spiritual Self-Sufficiency
Jesus says: “You think you’re rich, but you’re poor.” “You think you’re seeing clearly, but you’re blind.”
Question: “Where do students today act like they don’t need God?” • Popularity • Social media vibes • Friend group security • Comfort
Proverbs 28:13 NLT
People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.
3. Jesus Loves Enough to Correct
“As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline.” He isn’t shaming — He’s pursuing.
This is why we sing and talk about being refined in the fire all the time.
verse 18 Jesus says ʼi counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich.
I love this so much.
why do we use the word gold and silver all the time when the bible talks about making us into something new,
its becasue its mallable.
you can shape it
and when a gold smith is working and purifying gold its done in a very hot furnance and he uses the furnace to work our the impurities
impurities like selfishness, pride, unbelief.
and heʼll conintue to work and work and hammer and hammer and melt and melt until the gold is so pure he can see his own reflection in it.
that how jesus is working to refine each and every one of us.
molding us, shapping us, heat, and fire, and working us until he sees his own reflection in us.
we were made in the image of God weʼre meant to reflect him and be that image to the world and this is how jesus does this.
through correction
James 1:22 NLT
But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

4. Jesus Is Knocking — Not For Judgment, But Relationship
Powerful image: Jesus isn’t slamming the door. He’s knocking.
He wants:
Real conversations
Real repentance - Not an apology
Real relationship
Application Challenge (10 minutes)
“Hot or Cold?” Stations Have three posters around the room: 🔥 HOT — passionate, committed ❄️ COLD — searching, honest 😐 LUKEWARM — distracted, half-hearted
Ask students to walk to the one that describes them right now. Close with short challenge + prayer.
Small Group Discussion Questions
What does “lukewarm” mean in your own words?
Why do you think Jesus would rather us be “cold” than lukewarm?
Where in your life have you been spiritually comfortable?
What would it look like for you to “open the door” to Jesus?
What is one thing you can commit to this week to stir your faith?
