Reflections on Psalm 107:1-3 and 1 Chronicles 16:34-36

The Power of Thanksgiving in Times of Deliverance

Throughout the Bible, thanksgiving is a recurring theme, especially in moments of deliverance and restoration. Two passages that beautifully illustrate this are Psalm 107:1-3 and 1 Chronicles 16:34-36. These scriptures remind us of the importance of gratitude when God intervenes in our lives, rescuing us from trouble and gathering us back into safety and community.

In these verses, we see a call to remember God's steadfast love and faithfulness. Expressing thanks is not just a response to blessing, but a way to acknowledge God's active presence in our lives. When we pause to give thanks, especially after experiencing deliverance, we build a deeper trust in God and a stronger sense of community among those who share in His grace. God rescues His people from physical danger, oppression, or captivity and spiritually from sin, evil and death.

How do we experience God’s deliverance in our lives? I’m glad you asked that question!

Spiritual Rescue: God delivers us from sin and its consequences through Jesus Christ (salvation).

Deliverance from evil forces: God sets us free from evil spirits, demonic influence and the power of satan. God frees us from emotional and psychological captivity.

Physical Rescue: God rescues us from immediate dangers, fears and life circumstances. God hasn’t promised us there would be no sickness, but God is the source of healing through both supernatural means and natural methods like doctors and medicine.

In the Scripture text God delivered His people acting out of love, grace and mercy to save His people.

1. God delivered the people from wandering in the wilderness. I remember our family traveling on vacation each summer with those big maps but now we have GPS guiding us. Similarly, God’s mercy acts as our divine GPS, He recalibrates us and guides us back on the right path when we get lost in life’s challenges. He redirects us back to safety with His love. We just need to trust our spiritual GPS the Holy Spirit.

2. God released His people from bondage.

Think back to how God delivered the Israelites from Babylonian captivity and the Ark of the Covenant was returned, the Ark represented God’s presence. Their hearts were heavy, much like when we feel trapped in our own lives. But through His grace, God brought them back to joy and restoration. This historical deliverance mirrors our personal experiences of release from bondage when we trust in God's love.

3. Delivered the sick from death.

Now image a tiny bird fell from its nest and couldn’t fly. A kind person picked it up, nurtured it, and helped it become strong enough to return to the sky. Just like God delivered the sick from death, He nurtures and cares for us, giving us a second chance, encouraging us to spread our wings and soar again.

4. Delivers sailors from the sea.

Think of those sailors caught in a storm at sea, fearing for their life. Just when they felt they would drown, a lifeboat appeared, saving them. The lifeboat is God’s goodness as He delivers sailors from the sea, reminding us that in our darkest moments, His love is like that life-saving boat, ready to rescue us from drowning in fear and regret.

Giving thanks to God involves expressing gratitude to God for blessings and life circumstances. Show your thanks through action.

Thank God for His goodness and mercy, even in difficult times because He’s ever present. Give him thanks by praying, reading scripture, worshiping and obeying His Word.
