Luke 2:8–14 CSB
In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped tightly in cloth and lying in a manger.” Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people he favors!
I have this on a little plaque my girls got me last Christmas. I can not hear this and not see Linus calling for the spotlight. Every year, those kids and adults, get to hear about the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
I am grateful that the next generation gets to hear it.
Let me please take a moment and say something that has been on my heart.
I have been taking in the holiday season and I am excited because I see something from the pews at NEC.
People taking the reigns and are wanting to reach, teach and serve more than ever.
Come the 13th of this month, I will have been here 5 full years, teaching from this pulpit.
I will say, I am more excited now than when I first started.
This Advent starts something new here at NEC. A fire that is starting to burn brighter and brighter, making it a light upon the hill for all to see.
There is a desire that is almost palpable. There is a hunger that is almost insatiable. It feels like a train that can not and should not stop.
As the pastor, I am so overjoyed. It feels like NEC is taking what it has been taught from the bible and has decided enough is enough, we must be the hands and feet we are called to be.
Your theology is what you are when the talking stops and the action starts.
Colin Morris
Action has started at NEC.
From the IMPACT team, to the upcoming prayer team, to those with servant hearts, to kids reading their bible, to the out reaches.
NEC is catching fire.
Every year, there is a phrase or a word I lean on and pray over for the church.
This years word is Catching Fire. It takes one who’s heart says, ”I want to do this!” and they are on fire because of it.
I see this now, here, and in the future for NEC!
The Lord has and does continue to shine His light in our lives, we now call out, let Your fire fall. Fall upon us so much that it melts our hearts and the lead in our feet.
We call out for the fire to fall down upon the hill we call NEC. Let it drive us now and into the future.
655If there were only one prayer which I might pray before I died, it should be this: “Lord, send thy church men filled with the Holy Ghost and with fire.”—10.337
Charles Spurgeon
We will be for the next four weeks, we will be look at Christ in Christmas by going over the names in Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6 CSB
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Using the view point of fire, Christ names here will help us and drive us as we call for more Holy Spirit fire.
Christ as wonderful counselor gives us the godly wisdom we need to burn with that fire
Christ as mighty God gives us the ability to burn with His strength even in our weakness.
Christ as Eternal father shows the faithfulness and enduring nature of Him to burn brighter than ever before.
Christ as prince of peace shows us how to live with true peace and burn hot in a chaotic world.
Church I do not need to ask you if you are ready for that fire, I see you are ready. Let’s take this next year and burn so bright, that Christ name shines in every dark corner in our community.
Let’s pray!
Wonderful Counselor:
Wonderful (Pele) -beyond human explanation
Counselor (Yo’etz)- one who exacts wise plans
This term is used exclusively for God’s actions and nature, indicating that the Counselor, Jesus Christ, is not merely human, but possesses divine, awe-inspiring qualities. He will offer guidance rooted in divine revelation, and not human opinion.
So the full definition of Wonderful Counselor is the Messiah who is the divine source of supernatural wisdom, guidance, and miraculous power.
Supernatural Wisdom
Jesus is the embodiment of all God’s wisdom and knowledge.
Colossians 2:3 CSB
In him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
This verse shows us that Christ has full understand of God and His purpose is found in Him alone.
We must understand that His counsel is flawless. The reason why is because He knows everything about every situation, past, present and future.
Hebrews 4:13 CSB
No creature is hidden from him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.
The first part of Christ as the Wonderful Counselor is supernatural wisdom, the second is
2. Guidance and Direction
This name, Wonderful Counselor mean we can come to Jesus for clarity and direction in all of our life’s decisions and dilemmas.
We do this through prayer and His word.
Proverbs 3:5–6 CSB
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.
NEC will first and foremost be a church that seeks the Lord’s counsel in everything with prayer, worship and study of Scripture.
Last week, I said that if we do not do that, we are in rebellion, because we start to think we are smarter that God.. Rebellion to God’s word is like throwing water on that fire we are calling for.
Supernatural Wisdom, Guidance and direction and finally
3. Miraculous Power
Christ as Wonderful Counselor does not offer advice like human counselors. He provides power and grace to implement the counsel and resolve deep seated spiritual and emotional problems. That is when a difficult situation turns from a difficulty to a miracle.
Acts 10:38 CSB
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were under the tyranny of the devil, because God was with him.
This title that Christ has highlights the unique nature of Him as both a compassionate guide who understands human struggles, because He was born as a man, and an all-knowing, all-powerful God capable of leading people to eternal life.
Now I want to start something that I will end each message this coming year and it is called
Wood for the Fire
Christ as our Wonderful Counselor is always available and present to us through the Holy Spirit.
Through the Holy Spirit we can access comfort, strength, and guidance all the time.
That means for the fire to burn brighter than before, we must call upon the Counselor. For His wisdom, his guidance and for his power.
John 14:26 CSB
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.
We need that Holy Spirit fire to burn inside of each one of us, and we must lean upon the Wonderful Counselor in it all.
