Genesis 46:27

The theological significance of the 70 descendants of Jacob traveling to Egypt is profound and multifaceted. The number 70 is theologically significant, representing a symbolic parallel between humanity as a whole and Israel as the potential “new humanity”. What God had originally attempted to accomplish through all humankind in Genesis 1-11, He was now seeking to achieve through a specific nation—Israel.
The number 70 suggests completeness on a large scale, symbolizing the nations of the earth. Jacob’s family of 70 is seen as a “microcosm of the wider family of humanity.” This number has deep theological significance in the context of ancient Near Eastern religion. Canaanite texts provide evidence of a belief in 70 sons of god, and for ancient Israelites, the number 70 expressed Yahweh’s choice of Israel as His chosen people.
At Babel, God “disinherited the nations” and effectively dismissed them like a father disowning his children. In the very next chapter, He calls Abraham, essentially “starting over to create an earthly human family for himself”4. Critically, in His covenant with Abram, God promised that all nations would be blessed through his descendants. Israel would serve as a “conduit” and “mediator”, leaving a “spiritual bread-crumb trail” back to God, ultimately through the Messiah.
This narrative beautifully illustrates how God established nations corresponding to the number of Israelites, with Israel being instrumental in blessing the nations. The Christian tradition recognized that the church would take up the charge of bringing the promissory blessing to the nations.
Deut 32

8  When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance,

when he divided mankind,

he fixed the borders of the peoples

according to the number of the sons of God.

Deuteronomy 32 describes a pivotal moment where Yahweh dispersed nations at Babel, effectively disinheriting them and allowing them to come under the power of lesser gods. However, Israel alone belongs to Yahweh: “the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage
The significance of the number 70 in Genesis 46 is profoundly theological, connecting directly to the Deuteronomy 32 worldview. Israel is symbolically positioned as the “new humanity”, with the 70 descendants of Israel symbolically replacing the traditional 70 nations of the world. What God had originally attempted to accomplish through all of humanity in Genesis 1-11, He was now seeking to achieve through this specific nation—Israel.
This symbolism was so powerful that even in the New Testament, when Jesus sends out disciples, the number matches the nations to reinforce this theological message of reclaiming the dispersed nations. His kingdom inauguration meant these 70 nations would be readopted.
the Exodus—literally “the way out”—powerfully demonstrates God delivering His people from darkness, revealing Him as “a mighty warrior who is going to deliver His people into the land He promised them
