2 Timothy: Guarding the Flame

INTRODUCTION

Hope you had a happy thanksgiving!

Read 2 Timothy 3:1 — “But know this: in the last days perilous times will come.”

In the 1952 Road Runner & Wile E. Coyote cartoon “Beep Beep,” there’s a moment that perfectly illustrates parenting in a godless world.

If the flame goes out, the future goes out. If the flame goes out, the plan dies. If the flame goes out, hope ends.

That is parenting.

2 Timothy 1:6 ESV

6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands,

Today we ought to be encouraged with this main idea today that we are going to break down:

“To guard the flame of the next generation, we must be wise about the world around us, watchful for the wolves among us, and intentional in the way we walk with Christ.”

MAIN POINT 1: WE MUST BE WISE ABOUT THE WORLD

(2 Timothy 3:1–4)

1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

I know what you’re thinking, “If Paul never had kids, how did he describe my teenagers so perfectly?” He must have been a youth pastor.

A. The Last Days Are Marked by Decay (v. 1)

Biblically, “last days” began at resurrection/Pentecost.

I firmly believe that God has always allowed “sign’s” of his return to keep people focused on his return. We’ve been in the end times since Jesus rose from the dead.

Every day we inch closer and closer to eternity.

Thanksgiving is a time when people get together and overshare their opinions, and grumpy grandparents talk about how bad things are.

This is sorta what Paul is doing, except his end goal isn’t to be cranky, but to encourage and to empower Timothy and the Church then and today to Press on!

Culture has been bad before, but few cultures have ever been more vocal and obvious about “Loving Yourself”

B. Culture Saturated With Self (v. 2)

“Lovers of themselves… lovers of money… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.”

“Love Yourself First” is the number one “Self-Help” associated Hashtag on tiktok generating over 20+ Billion views so far in 2025.

Radical individualism → “my truth,” self-gratification, loss of shared moral responsibility.

C. Breakdown Begins in the Home (v.2 cont.)

“Disobedient to parents… unloving (astorgoi)” → breakdown of natural affection.

Family breakdown precedes societal breakdown (Luther).

Before blaming government or culture, examine our own homes.

Question for every home:

Does my family see the gospel lived out?

Does my lifestyle match what I claim at church?

The world is not friendly to faith.

1 John 2:15–16 ESV

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.

The home is the haven from worldliness.

We must be Wary of the way the world is, and protect our children. But we must also recognize this isn’t only an issue “out there”

MAIN POINT 2: WE MUST BE WATCHFUL FOR WOLVES

(2 Timothy 3:6–9)

2 Timothy 3:5–9 ESV

5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

The first four centuries of the Church was marked by both persecution, and constant threat of false teaching.

D. What Wolves are Like: Form of Godliness (Fear) Without Power (Weapon) (v. 5)

Wolves teach Godliness and Use it as their weapon. (Maniuplation)

Shepherds Fear God, and trust his Word as their weapon.

A. How Wolves Operate: False Teachers Target Vulnerabilities (v. 6)

We live in an age not of information suppression, but overload.

Early Church: Strangers

Today: Screens

Authentic ≠ Gospel

Eloquent ≠ Gospel

Smart ≠ Gospel

Wary/Skeptical ≠ Gospel

Anytime a culture neglects truth- Women and Children always pay a price.

The Early church lifted up women in a way that the world had never seen before. Everywhere Gospel Community Exists, Women and Children Flourish.

Early church: Strangers, manipulators infiltrating homes, exploiting emotionally wounded new believers.

Modern equivalent = Screens not Strangers.

We underestimate how effectively our phones are discipling us.

Early exposure: pornography, ideology, false teaching.

Restrictions are easy to bypass; kids are curious and sinners like everyone else.

The voices shaping your home are often unexamined.

B. The Medium is the Message

The world is a scary place.

Prioritization of physical safety has shifted our kids experiences towards a “Disembodied experience”

Even if our kids aren’t watching something evil, phones teach out kids that real life is disembodied.

Example of Roblox.

How easy is it to manipulate and target our kids, when “Real Life” is life between our ears, instead of embodied life.

Our kids minds are being completely rewired

When we encourage children to spend most of their free time connected to a screen (In the name of safety) we’ve cornered our kids for the wolves.

C. False Teachers Target Vulnerabilities

Phones

Social media

“Christian influencers” who preach heresy

Entertainment

School systems

Peer groups

D. Deception Desensitizes the Heart (Janis & Jambres)

Janis & Jambres- Performed tricks that resembled the Power of God that worked through Moses.

Evaluate:

What are my kids watching?

What am I watching?

What voices did I allow into our home without noticing?

MAIN POINT 3: WE MUST BE WILLFUL ABOUT OUR WALK

1. Don’t be deceived.

Dunning-Kruger Effect

Definition: The less a person knows, the more confident they tend to be. And the more they actually grow in knowledge, the more humble and cautious they become. (Self-Awareness).

“Faith Can be Simple but it cannot be naive.”

Matthew 10:16 ESV

16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

Spiritual Dunning-Kruger Effect, is not about what we know, but about the hardness of our hearts.

“We cannot expect to guard the flame of the next generation if we are walking around spiritually blind.”

“Evil people and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.” v.13

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

Ephesians 4:22 ESV

22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

Deceived 72 times in the Bible.

Desires 170 times in the bible.

The cure for spiritual blindness cannot be found in the self. We need other people.

2 Timothy 3:10–11 ESV

10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me.

A. Paul Sets the Example

Timothy watched Paul’s life—doctrine, love, endurance, suffering.

Timothy’s faith grew because an older believer invested in him.

B. Discipleship Happens Constantly

We are always being discipled—question is by whom?

The Word?

Godly mentors?

Or the world and algorithms?

C. The Need for Intergenerational Discipleship

Younger believers need older believers pouring into them.

Younger believers: Find your Paul.

Older believers: Find your Timothy.

The next generation doesn’t need you to be cool—they need authenticity, availability, and truth.

D. Ministry Opportunities

Children’s ministry, youth ministry.

They need you, and you need them

CONCLUSION

We are strangers in a foreign land, but not abandoned.

God has given us His Word, His Spirit, and His people.

Until Jesus returns, we commit to:

Be wary of the world

Be watchful for wolves

Be willful about our walk

Be wise about the Word

Call to action:

Guard your home.

Invest in the next generation.

Immerse your family in Scripture.

Make disciples until Christ comes.
