Sermon Title: The power of penal substitutionary atonement
Text: “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”
1 Peter 2:24 Esv
Introduction
Illustration: Imagine this morning you're on death row and your number is called and someone who was completely innocent paid your debt. They took your place on the chair. This is penal substitutionary atonement. Christ took our spot and paid our debt in full so we could stand before an almighty God righteous.
Main Idea: Why did Christ take our place ? This is the true gospel of Jesus Christ he came to save the sinners.
Point 1: Christ took on our sins on the cross
Point 1: Christ took on our sins on the cross
Scripture: he himself bore our sins in his body on the cross 1 Peter 2:24A
Illustration: imagine your standing in the court room, you're on trial and you're about to be condemned and the judge's son stands up and says father take me instead let him go. Christ’s sacrifice was greater than that we were dead in our sin and shame and he healed it all
Application: believe and live in Christ finished works your sins have been paid and bought. Stop carrying your guilt and shame in Christ we are a new creation
Meaning :this is the heart of the gospel he took on our sin and made us new. We had a heart transplant that’s what we need to live in Christ or else we continue to sin. Christ didn’t die to make salvation possible; he died so our salvation is certain.
Point 2: we must die to our sin and submit to Christ fully
Point 2: we must die to our sin and submit to Christ fully
Scripture: Peter says Christ bore our sins “that we might die to sin.(1peter2:24b)The cross not only saves us from sin’s penalty it saves us from sin’s power. Dying to sin means it no longer controls us; we have new desires and that is to do what is honoring to an almighty God.
Illustration: if you was out hiking and were bitten by a poisonous snake and you received the anti venom and was cursed you wouldn’t go back to the same snake and pick it up again just like sin it’s a poison to us you have to be wise in what you allow cause it’s easy to get caught up in it again
Application: find out and call out your sins especially the ones you constantly struggle with, submit them and flee from them praying for forgiveness so that you might not slip back into temptation to sin more.
Meaning : sin is bad we all know this and it will destroy you if you're not mindful that it’s in your life we shouldn’t want the fence. The fence is sin. We should walk on the side of righteousness. We should do things that honor God.
Point 3:what was the result of the cross ? We can now live righteous through Christ.
Point 3:what was the result of the cross ? We can now live righteous through Christ.
Scripture: By His wounds you have been healed.” 1 peter 2:24c
Illustration: we were dead in our trespasses. No life there. Comes a substitution and takes our place on the court and declares us righteous through our faith in him sola fide Christ took our spot beared our name our sin so we can live through him.
Application: let Christ reshape your life. I know there are things in my life he was immediately like they got to go. Music I listened to suddenly some of it bothered me and it had to go. We all can say we don’t sin but we’d all be liars then. You can’t live a double life either. It's not honorable or righteous to live that way.
Meaning : This is spiritual healing, the healing of the soul from sin’s infection. But Peter also says Christ died so that we might live to righteousness. Not just avoiding sin pursuing holiness. The cross does not merely erase our past; it empowers our present.Righteous living is not the root of salvation it is the fruit of salvation.
Conclusion
Recap: Christ fulfilled Isaiah 53:5 he was wounded for our transgressions Christ substituted his life for ours. Christ died so that we could become righteous and stand before the father l
Final Illustration/Testimony: time is ticking your time is now to submit to his word and follow him we serve a jealous God you can’t worship him and money. Like he said you’ll love one and not the other.
