Welcome to Vertical Church
Good morning.
Let Us Continue to Worship God
A Psalm of Praise
A Psalm of Thanksgiving. 1 Make a loud shout to Yahweh, all the earth. 2 Serve Yahweh with gladness; Come before Him with joyful songs. 3 Know that Yahweh, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. 5 For Yahweh is good; His lovingkindness endures forever And His faithfulness, generation unto generation.
Scripture Reading: Romans 8:28-31
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. 29 Because those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers; 30 and those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and those whom He justified, He also glorified. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
Introduction:
Introduction: Romans 8:28-31 The Logical, Chronological, and Theological Timing of God
Romans 8:28-31 The Logical, Chronological, and Theological Timing of God
The Latin word for "logical" is logica, which comes directly from the Ancient Greek term logikḗ. This Greek term means "of or pertaining to speech or reason," and it is derived from the word logos, meaning "reason, word, or speech". Therefore, the origin of "logical" is fundamentally tied to the concept of reason and the proper use of words and thought.
For the believer, logos has another meaning
Believers have hope because even in suffering God will use it for good. And in Sunday's passage, believers have hope because what God has begun He has determined in eternity past to finish. If you are in Christ you will someday be in Heaven. God is for you, has always been for you, and will eternally be for you.
(1) Romans 8 is not a spiral staircase, it is an apartment building staircase. There’s a landing before and after each floor.
Romans 8:28
The first verse of last week’s passage was the last verse of the week before’s passage and this week’s last passage is the first verse of this week’s passage and the last verse of this week’s passage will be the first verse of next week’s passage
Each time we need to stop and look back and then look forward. We need to enjoy the view
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.
Romans Good for Whom?
Some say that “those who are called” is referring to those who respond positively to the preaching of the gospel. It is a nice theory, but it is not what the apostle is saying. Paul is defining those who love God as the ones “who are the called according to God’s purpose.”
prothesis - ) literally means "a setting forth" or "placing before" and has several meanings depending on the context, most commonly referring to God's divine purpose or divine plan
In the New Testament, particularly in the writings of Paul, it refers to a plan or intention, such as God's predetermined will.
11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that the purpose of God according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls,
11 In Him, we also have been made an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,
10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord,
9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,
God has a divine purpose for your life that He determined in eternity past and even in suffering He is accomplishing His plan
God has a divine plan for your life that goes far beyond your coming to Christ and includes not only your sanctification, but your transformation and your glorification
20 “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to do what has happened on this day, to keep many people alive.
(2) Romans 8 involves the Logical, Chronological, and Theological Timing of God
What we are presented with in Scripture is both a divine and a human perspective
29 Because those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers; 30 and those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and those whom He justified, He also glorified.
Romans–Galatians Comment
“Foreknew” points to Paul’s conviction that God’s knowledge and purpose (cf. comment on 8:28) precede and are the ultimate cause of the salvation of those who love him (v. 28). This does not eliminate the need for faith; it rather assures that faith will achieve its goal since God stands behind the rise of the faith impulse.
God called the world into existence, and He has called you to eternal life through the preaching of the Gospel
And if you have been called to eternal life it is your duty to preach the gospel, not your testimony, but the gospel of Jesus Christ which is the power of God to as many people as you are to able to preach to
If you have been a believer for any length of time you know you have the capacity to resist - I plead with you, don’t resist - surrender, offer yourself, repent, do what is necessary to fight the good fight and to finish the race
(3) The last verse is the first verse: A response and a challenge.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
Congregation of the Lord Jesus Christ, in all your darkness and troubles, remember what you are and have. You’ve been loved with an everlasting love, you are supported by everlasting arms, you are recipients of everlasting life, and heirs of an everlasting kingdom all sealed and made sure by the blood of an everlasting covenant. Amen.
