There are Psalms that celebrate the establishment and everlastingness of the Davidic Dynasty. David being enthroned as King. These Psalms are called the Royal Kingship Psalms or the Enthronement Psalms.
These are Psalms presumably composed for court occasions during Davids reign as king they serve to legitimize his authority as King.
Psalm 89 and several other “royal psalms” were likely written for special events in the royal court during David’s monarchy to affirm the king’s God-given authority.
Several of these psalms (especially Psalms 2, 21, 72, and 110) may have been used for the coronation of a Davidic king—either at the actual enthronement or as part of an annual festival that remembered the king’s rise to the throne.
Like Psalm 89, Psa 132 describes the Davidic promise as a solemn “covenant” Yahweh has “sworn” to David (Psa 132:10–11).
For Your servant David’s sake, Do not turn away the face of Your Anointed.
The Lord has sworn in truth to David; He will not turn from it: “I will set upon your throne the fruit of your body.
The Davidic Covenant and Its Messianic Implications.
The dividic covenant has strong ties to Messianic implications!
1–2 Samuel builds and develops this messianic idea in Scripture. The idea of a future messiah is highly emphasized in these two books
Early in the book, “anointing” is associated with kingship for the first time in the Old Testament (1 Sam 2:10b, 35; 9:16; 10:1; 12:3; 16:3, 6; 24:6, 10; 26:9, 11, 16, 23; 2 Sam 1:14, 16, 21; 19:21; 22:51; 23:1). In order to understand the connection between “anointing” and the “messianic idea” it is necessary to know that the English term “Messiah” is simply a transliteration of the Hebrew noun mashiakh [4899, 5431] meaning “anointed one.”
When the use of this terminology is traced into the New Testament, we find that the term christos [5547, 5986] (Christ), also meaning “anointed one,” is the Greek equivalent for the Hebrew “Messiah.” The expression “the LORD’s anointed” is used so frequently in 1–2 Samuel that it nearly becomes synonymous with the word “king.” Although the technical sense of “Messiah” as an “ideal king of the future” did not emerge until later in Israel’s history, the foundation for its usage lies in the association of anointing with kingship that is first introduced in 1 Samuel.
What is the Davidic Covenant?
The Davidic Covenant is a promise from God to David, found in 2 Samuel 7 and 1 Chronicles 17, which declares that the Messiah (Jesus Christ) would come from David’s lineage and establish an eternal kingdom.
The Davidic Covenant is a promise that God will establish an eternal kingdom through His lineage. That Kingdom would be establish by Christ Himself.
In 2 Sam. 7 God made an eternal covenant with David.
that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.”
David had become well settled in Jerusalem and was enjoying a period of peace.
He look at his palace and the luxury he now acquired and thought to himself that the tent that God dwelt in was no longer suitable. He wanted to build God a new house like His house made of cedar.
A place of permanence. Like God we are in Jerusalem and we are in a way better place then where we were before settle for a while.
He need to build a place where God can dwell that is more suitable for God.
Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying,
“Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Would you build a house for Me to dwell in?
For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a tent and in a tabernacle.
Wherever I have moved about with all the children of Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’ ” ’
Though what David wanted was a noble thing but it wasn’t requested by God.
There are things that are noble but at times God hasn’t request these things from us.
“The need doesn’t constitute the call”
Just because theres a need doesn’t mean I’m responsible to fulfill it.
Davids thoughts where premature. Since the Exodus God resided in a tent. This temporary structure.
David wanted a place of permanence, but God wanted to reside in a temporary structure.
Thats a very important principle! We live our lives here on earth as if its permanent. All our money wealth. We build, toil, stress so much so you would think we would be here forever.
Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel.
David you had humble beginnings. You where a shepherd boy. I brought you into this large place. This palace made of cedar.
God didn’t bring David to this place so he can dictate to God how things should be done.
You where following the sheep now you’re leading the people of God but in no way have you arrived and will you ever arrive to the place where can dictate to God how things should be.
And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth.
Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously,
since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the Lord tells you that He will make you a house.
God tells David,
I have been with you wherever you have gone. Thats geographic as well as in life. Thats going through the trials of Saul, thats wrestling with you sin, thats feeling the weight of shame. When we feel distant from Him He is there. Or when we feel close to Him He is there.
He cut off all Davids enemies. Oh but God I fought yes, but God gave the victory!
He made David a great name!
All the things that David is known for God did it!!!
Vs 11 Lord tells you that He will make you a house.
We have to remember who’s in the driver seat its not you king David.
Just because you have some fruit in your life doesn’t mean you have mastered Christianity.
The most mature thing you can do is grow in confidence in Gods ability. Not in my own but Gods.
“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.
But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
Solomon later on would be responsible for building the temple for God not David.
Likewise, God had gathered Israel to Himself and would plant them securely in their own land. The house to be built for David would be a royal house, a dynasty of kings.
vs 16 It would originate with him but would never end
The kingdom and its throne would be permanent, a realm over which the Son of David would reign forever.
“Although my house is not so with God, Yet He has made with me an everlasting covenant, Ordered in all things and secure. For this is all my salvation and all my desire; Will He not make it increase?
The promise that David and his seed would be kings fulfilled the even more ancient Abrahamic Covenant blessing that the patriarchs would be the fathers of kings (Gen. 17:6, 16; 35:11).
I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.
To Judah, great-grandson of Abraham, was given the explicit pledge that a promised ruler would come from Judah (Gen. 49:10).
The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
David was aware of his election by God and of the theological significance of that election as part of the messianic line that would result in a divine Descendant and King (Pss. 2:6–7; 110; cf. Ethan’s words in Ps. 89:3–4).
“I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David:
‘Your seed I will establish forever, And build up your throne to all generations.’ ” Selah
“Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”
“I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.
The prophets also attested to the Davidic Messiah, the One who would rule over all and forever on His throne (Isa. 9:1–7; 11:1–5; Jer. 30:4–11; Ezek. 34:23–24; 37:24–25; Amos 9:11–15).
“On that day I will raise up The tabernacle of David, which has fallen down, And repair its damages; I will raise up its ruins, And rebuild it as in the days of old;
That they may possess the remnant of Edom, And all the Gentiles who are called by My name,” Says the Lord who does this thing.
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains shall drip with sweet wine, And all the hills shall flow with it.
I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them.
I will plant them in their land, And no longer shall they be pulled up From the land I have given them,” Says the Lord your God.
“David My servant shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd; they shall also walk in My judgments and observe My statutes, and do them.
Then they shall dwell in the land that I have given to Jacob My servant, where your fathers dwelt; and they shall dwell there, they, their children, and their children’s children, forever; and My servant David shall be their prince forever.
I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them—My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd.
And I, the Lord, will be their God, and My servant David a prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken.
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
His delight is in the fear of the Lord, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;
But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist.
But they shall serve the Lord their God, And David their king, Whom I will raise up for them.
The continued fulfillment of this covenant. Luke 1:31-33
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
The summary of the Davidic Covenant 1 Chron. 17:11-14
And it shall be, when your days are fulfilled, when you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your seed after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.
I will be his Father, and he shall be My son; and I will not take My mercy away from him, as I took it from him who was before you.
And I will establish him in My house and in My kingdom forever; and his throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
The Davidic Covenant is unconditional
The Davidic Covenant is unconditional because God does not place any conditions of obedience upon its fulfillment. The surety of the promises made rests solely on God’s faithfulness and does not depend at all on David or Israel’s obedience.
He will fulfill the covenant and David won’t even be alive! He will do it well after David is in heaven. Its unconditional.
The Core Promises of the Davidic Covenant
1. The Promise of the Land
God reaffirms the land promise previously given in the Abrahamic and Mosaic Covenants.
Israel is promised a permanent, secure place to dwell.
Scripture:
Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously,
2. The Promise of the Eternal Throne
God declares that a descendant (“seed”) of David will rule after him.
David’s kingdom and throne will be established forever.
This promise is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Messiah and eternal King.
Scripture:
“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
3. The Eternal Covenant Confirmed
God summarizes the covenant directly to David, affirming the eternal nature of His promise.
Scripture:
“And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.”
— 2 Samuel 7:16 (NKJV)
Key Terms of the Covenant
“House” — A dynasty in the lineage of David.
“Kingdom” — A people ruled under the authority of David’s line.
“Throne” — The sovereign authority of the king’s rule.
“Forever” — The eternal, unconditional nature of God’s promise to David and to Israel.
DAVIDIC COVENANT. An unconditional covenant in which God promised David he would have: (1) a house—a continuing dynasty; (2) a kingdom—Messiah would one day rule; (3) a throne; (4) an eternal rule.
Royal Psalms: 47; 93; 96–99
The royal or enthronement psalms extol God’s choice of his king, David. These psalms ultimately emphasize the kingship of God and explain the establishment of God’s rule through the Davidic covenant and its kings from David on to the promised Messiah, Jesus.
God’s universal rule is mediated through the earthly Davidic line, and the earthly and heavenly aspects of God’s rule come together perfectly through the past, present, and future rule of Jesus the Messiah. The psalmist recognizes that God is reigning on the throne and repeatedly declares, “God is King!” These psalms are basically psalms of descriptive praise, which are expanded and modified by the theme of God’s kingship.
Thus psalm was dedicated to this leader of the chorus. Many psalms where written To the chief musician. but he wasn’t overloaded with psalms
David possibly penned this and the Sons of Korah sung these psalms.
Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph!
For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth.
He will subdue the peoples under us, And the nations under our feet.
Theres a universal language that though nations have different tongues and ways of communication but the clapping of the hands are the most natural and most enthusiastic tokens of exultation are to be used in view of the victories of the Lord, and his universal reign.
Anytime there is clapping theres celebration.
“Shout” let your voices keep tune with your hands.
let him have all the honours of the day, and let them be loud, joyous, universal, and undivided.
With the voice of triumph,” with gladsome sounds, consonant with such splendid victories, so great a King, so excellent a rule, and such gladsome subjects.
If the Lord is King He has subjects we are His subjects!
He is a great King-
Great- referring to the magnitude of thy arm. Ex. 15:16
Fear and dread will fall on them; By the greatness of Your arm They will be as still as a stone, Till Your people pass over, O Lord, Till the people pass over Whom You have purchased.
great actions, things done nobly, especially of God,
Who does great things, and unsearchable, Marvelous things without number.
He does great things past finding out, Yes, wonders without number.
God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things which we cannot comprehend.
Pivot Psalms 2
The psalm was more then likely David celebration of his coronation. This Psalm was full of opposition from kings from pagan nations who where against God.
God is reaching out to the nations to forfeit your rebellious plans, and submit to the authority of The Son whom God has ordained to rule the nations with a rod of iron.
This Psalm is also a prophesy about the Messiah Jesus Christ.
With statements like “ You are My Son Today I have begotten You.”
Strong statements, Kiss the Son , lest He be angry.
And Authoritative statements paint a clear picture about
1 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.”
4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.
Psalm 2:1 “1 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?”
Verse 1 - Rage referring to the roaring of the sea. You ever experience the rolling and roaring of the sea.
They are like a horse running into battle with no regard for self. They neigh and rage with pride.
We think about Herod plotting to extinguish the Messiah by killing all male children two years and younger in Bethlehem. He was plotting a vain thing.
Psalm 2:2 “2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,”
The many had done their part, and now the mighty show themselves.—John Trapp.
Sometimes we are not sure if something is indeed a bonafide attack but then the mighty will show themselves.
Ultimately the Kings wanted blood. They didn’t want Jesus liberty, they didn’t want Jesus wealth because the kings of the earth where more wealthy then He. But they wanted death.
The devil isn’t satisfied until death has taken place.
But even the very things satan thought he could control or thought was final was ineffective with Jesus.
Have you ever been manipulated for so long you would yield, and yield and felt like there was no way out. Until you finally decided to say no, I’m not gonna be used, hurt , or manipulated.
You finally realized that person doesn’t have power of you any longer. So that person can’t use there manipulation it’s null and void.
Death was satans tool, But Jesus took that tool away and it became ineffective for believers in Christ.
In the devils mind the only thing that satisfies him is death.
Though Kings counsel against you they cannot defeat he counsel of heaven.
Psalm 2:3 “3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.””
Vs 3 - Let us disconnect from God and be independent. Let us be our own god.
They thought Christ laws are burdensome. Some much so they compared it to slavery.
“Cast away Their cords from us.”
What did our Savior say “ My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
John Trapp ~ Christs laws are no more burdensome to a regenerate man then wings to a bird.
Psalm 2:4 “4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.”
Imagine God is seeing the nations of the world plotting against Him and His anointed.
I could imagine Jesus just laughing.
what makes you think your little schemes can even touch heaven they can’t even leave earth.
They can’t touch outside of the parameters of there little world.
Like what makes you think you can even come remotely close to phasing God.
How laughable is that.
They can’t even think outside of the context of there life.
it. The LORD sits enthroned (cf.
Psalm 29:10 “10 The Lord sat enthroned at the Flood, And the Lord sits as King forever.”
The Lord was enthroned at the flood. The same Lord. What makes you think God is moved.
The description is anthropomorphic; God’s reaction is stated in human terms.
The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The Lord is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved.
Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.
The floods have lifted up, O Lord, The floods have lifted up their voice; The floods lift up their waves.
The Lord on high is mightier Than the noise of many waters, Than the mighty waves of the sea.
Your testimonies are very sure; Holiness adorns Your house, O Lord, forever.
