Through Christ we have obtained peace in face of what the world throws at us

John 14:27
Promised peace of the Holy Spirit
was a way that the ancient jewish audience would say goodbye to one another
Jesus is foretelling of when he is about to leave and he promises us that will have peace in the face of what the world throws at us
What’s unique about this peace he provides, is that it is not one that is ignorant

Paul’s peace in application

Paul understood this peace as no matter the circumstances unification with the Lord is ultimate.
Phil 1:12-18
From the walls of a prison he writes that he is grateful for his circumstances
The passage that follows this he is literally saying that if he dies he’s good with it
Paul gives his famous way to battle anxiety in the fourth chapter and what does he promise will come?
A Peace that surpasses all understanding
This peace that comes from Christ

What can we expect from peace?

It is not dependent on our circumstances
Our circumstances aren’t what promise peace. We are promised peace in the midst of our circumstances
it is unity and wholeness
Emphasizes the lack of conflict present in a relationship
Why do we surrender our worries and fears? Why do we continue to have a perspective focused on what Christ has for us?
Through the life, death and resurrection of Christ, we are no longer striving to accomplish peace. It has been given to us in Christ
OT life vs. NT life- One was always worried about proper justification, the other can rest in the completed work of Christ.

We celebrate the work of christ with great intensity at Christmas because it ushered in a peace in our relationship with the Lord
