Relationships - Part 1
Having donned the new man, who is renewed in full knowledge, according to the image of the one creating him, where there is no Greek and Judaean, Circumcision and Foreskin, barbarian, Scythian, slave, freeman; rather, the Anointed (Christ) is all things and is in all. Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, put on inward compassion, goodheartedness, humility, gentleness, magnanimity, upholding one another and forgiving one another if anyone should have a complaint against anyone just as the Lord [Anointed] forgave you, so you also. (Col 3:10-17)
Above all of these, love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the Anointed’s peace rule in your hearts, to which you were indeed called in one body; and become thankful. Let the word of the Anointed dwell within you richly, teaching and admonishing each other in all wisdom, in psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, singing in grace within your hearts to God; and everything you do whatsoever, in word or in deed, do all things in Lord Jesus’s name, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Col 3:10-17)
Okay, I read this again, because I want to remind us of where we are in the letter
It will be important for what is going to come next…Sigh…
Let’s summarize what we read:
There is no distinction: Therefore, holy and beloved, put on…
Inner compassion; goodheartedness; humility; gentleness; magnanimity; supporting one another; forgiving one another (just as the Lord forgave you);
Above all, holy and beloved…Love, which is the bond of perfection; let Christ’s peace rule in your heart; you are called in one body; and be thankful; let the word of Christ dwell richly in you; teaching and admonishing each other in wisdom, psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, singing in grace within your hearts to God; and whatever you do, in word or deed, do all in Christ’s name, giving thanks to God the Father.
This sounds wonderful, right?
What part of these would you disagree with?
Does it put pressure on you?
It should…because this is the section that precedes this…
Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing in the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, so that they may not lose heart. (Colossians 3:18-21)
Wives/Ladies: How many of you bristled at the verse?
If your spouse adhered to:
Inner compassion; goodheartedness; humility; gentleness
Magnanimity; supporting one another; forgiving one another
Just as Christ forgave you
Would that change your mind?
Or is it that term ‘subject’?
HUSBANDS:
How many of you were like, yeah, be subject to me?
Perhaps you don’t know the position marriage puts you in…
You, whether you like it or not, are considered a leader in your house
Leaders are held to a different standard throughout scripture
Judgment for you is more stringent
And NOT just for your wife…
CHILDREN:
You have a responsibility to your parents…
But notice, FATHERS, you hold responsibility over your children as a leader
Oh, and CHILDREN here is Neuter…it is not male or female
Son or Daughter: It is BOTH
Let’s look at a few other places the term ‘submit’
These are from the Gospel of Luke
Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them, and his mother treasured all these things in her heart.
This one, to me, is the key…
The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!”
This is how some husbands, so called men of God, Christians, treat their families.
You may think, ‘This does not relate!’
Um, yes, yes it does!
Do you remember this from our previous passage?
everything you do whatsoever, in word or in deed, do all things in Lord Jesus’s name, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Col 3:17)
Notice the use of the term ‘Name’
What do you think everything you do whatsoever, in word or deed, do in Jesus’ name means?
It means everything you do: Including how you treat your spouse and children
Let’s read that again
The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!”
What do you think is more important to them?
The fact Christ has dominion over demons
Or the fact that a demon is submitting to THEM…
Notice, they think the demon is submitting to THEM
It is not…it is submitting to the dominion of Christ
Which is why Christ says to them…
Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
You can see that Jesus understands EXACTLY what is going on here!
It is a heart posture that you are to have towards one another
Ephesians 5:21 is going to say that all are to be subject to one another
So, what do we make of this…
Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing in the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, so that they may not lose heart. (Colossians 3:18-21)
Let’s be really clear: If you are a loyal believer in God the Father through Jesus Christ, then you are agreeing to do this.
I am not going to sugarcoat it for us.
Not for wives, not for husbands, not for children
Scripture calls us to sacrifice, everyone in the family is called to GIVE UP something
Everyone in the family is called to OBEY God, without exception
If you are going to do anything in the Name
