The Promise

Isaiah 9:6–7 NLT
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
Christmas through the Eyes of Heaven.
The Promise
Isaiah 9:2–7

Did you ever break a promise?

Haven’t we all?
A thousand things can happen that keep us from fulfilling a promise.
We all have broken promises in our lives.
From products to politicians, we know promises can fail.

Promise made Promise kept

God has never broken one promise.
Every promise God makes - He keeps.
Isaiah 9 was written 700 years before Jesus was born—yet describes Him with stunning accuracy.
Israel was living in darkness
They lived with fear, political chaos, and spiritual confusion.
It’s into this environment that God sends a promise.
The promise of a child who will change everything.

The Promise Comes to a People in Darkness

Isaiah 9:2 NLT
The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.

The darkness

The Bible describes their condition as being in darkness.
This darkness was profound.
It was spiritual, moral, social, and political
The darkness lay heavy on the people of God.
Darkness describes our world too.
Anxiety at an all-time high
People overwhelmed by uncertainty
Families broken and relationships fractured.
Hearts heavy with grief, guilt, fear, or disappointment.
God specializes in showing up in the dark.
Genesis 1 — creation begins in darkness
Exodus — pillar of fire in the night
Old Testament — God appears in dark seasons.
New Testament
John 1:5 NLT
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

Do you feel surround by darkness?

God sees you.
God knows you. (Psalm 139)
God sends hope, and then He sends help.

The Promise is a Person

Isaiah 9:6 NLT
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

“Child is born” — His humanity

Jesus came as a man.
John 1:14 ESV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
He understands our weakness, tears, and temptations.
Jesus knew loneliness, rejection, and pain.

“Son is given” — His divinity

Fully Human, but also Fully God.
Underline “Word” in verse 14
John 1:1 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The God who created the universe was also born in swaddling clothes in an animal stall.
Christmas is God shining a light.
It’s not just a message, not just a miracle, but a Savior.
Philippians 3:8 NLT
Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ

The Promise Comes with a Name Above Every Name

Wonderful Counselor

Counselor = One who gives advice
Jesus understands us perfectly
Therefore, he guides us.
If he guides us, He strengthens us.

Mighty God

Not merely a teacher—He is God in flesh.
The power to save, heal, restore, and deliver.
No enemy can overcome Him
When life feels overwhelming, He brings power.

Everlasting Father

A Father who never abandons.
His care is permanent and filled with compassion.
When life feels lonely, He brings belonging.

Prince of Peace

Peace with God (salvation)
Peace of God (inner calm)
Peace in our relationships
When life feels chaotic, He brings peace.

“The Promise Is for You.”

Christmas is not just something God did.
Christmas is something God does.
The light still shines.
The promise still stands.
The Savior still comes into dark places.
