TEXT: Isaiah 9:6-7
REFLECTION:
_____
Short: God's mighty power surpasses all human authority and spiritual adversities, offering believers assurance and hope of His sovereignty and omnipotence in their lives.
Context: The Assyrian army was a powerful foe for Israel.  Babylon would be a conquering force for Israel.  But this child that would be born would be the MIGHTY GOD OF HEAVEN robed in flesh.  All rulers, systems, people, and powers are dwarfed by this power and might of the God of Heaven.
_____

INTRODUCTION

700 years before that fateful night in a stable where Mary delivered this son, this child who was the only hope for mankind to come out of darkness and know the love of the Heavenly Father; 700 hundred years before Bethlehem’s star, Isaiah is prophesying to a people who are in the grip of darkness and headed for thicker darkness.
It’s really really bad for Israel at this point…not a tidy Christmas play with every character neatly, perfectly where they are supposed to be…with bright lights perfectly illuminating the stage.
It’s really bad and it’s going to get worse.
AND it’s going to be 700 years before this promised child will be born.
I don’t want to GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY right here at the front, but take note…
You may have something in your life RIGHT NOW that feels like darkness encroaching…God can handle it!
You may have someONE in your life that is a real drain on you Spiritually - I don’t just mean that they are difficult or that they are going throught a hard time or that they are needy…
I mean this person pokes at you…makes fun of your Christianity…taunts you…relishes in your failures; they are a source of darkness / not light; (LISTEN TO ME) GOD CAN HANDLE THEM (and sustain you)!
You may be right on the brink of being overcome, yourself, with a crippling sense of weakness; GOD IS GREATER…HIS POWER CAN HANDLE IT.

TRANSITION

Isaiah is speaking to a people who are in a state of rebellion.
a people surrounded by darkness and wickedness and enemies.
a people who would rather consort with evil witchcraft and flirt with the occult than to wait on the LORD.
a people that knows what it means to be terrorized.
(sounds like he’s speaking to us today, too, doesn’t it?)
What will God’s answer be to these terrors, this darkness…
It is a child.
It is a son that will be GIVEN!
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
This is the MESSIAH that will come. God, the Son, will robe himself in flesh, and come to this earth through the womb of a virgin in Israel.
The power of God is so far superior to the Assyrias and all the big shots of this world that he can defeat them by coming as a mere child.
His answer to the bullies swaggering through history is not to become an even bigger bully.
His answer is Jesus.
HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED, MIGHTY GOD!
Let’s note a few things about his Might that would have resonated with the people of Isaiah’s day and that bring great victory to us today.
Let’s look at His Majesty - the Psalmists capture that so well…and Isaiah’s crowd would have known that.
We’ll look at HIS KINGDOM that Isaiah mentions right here in our text.
We’ll see how His mighty hand Delivers - again from the Psalms that would have been sung by God’s people.
Turn with me to PSALM 68
Let’s put verses 32-35 on the screen and read it together.
Psalm 68:1–4 ESV
1 God shall arise, his enemies shall be scattered; and those who hate him shall flee before him! 2 As smoke is driven away, so you shall drive them away; as wax melts before fire, so the wicked shall perish before God! 3 But the righteous shall be glad; they shall exult before God; they shall be jubilant with joy! 4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him!
Psalm 68:32–35 ESV
32 O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord, Selah 33 to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. 34 Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies. 35 Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel—he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God!

1. His Majesty Triumphs (Psalm 68: 1-4; 32-35)

Psalm 68 paints God as the majestic, conquering King whose very presence scatters His enemies, summons global praise, shakes the heavens, and strengthens His people. His majesty isn’t quiet—it triumphs.
HIS MAJESTY TRIUMPHS
v1 - He rises and His enemies are scattered.
HE IS NOT A PASSIVE GOD - they knew that in the Old Testament!
He moves…and as He moves, the enemy melts away.
HIS MAJESTY TRIUMPHS
v2-3 - The wicked perish, but the righteous rejoice
Notice how the the wicked flee but the righteous celebrate in His presence!
HIS MAJESTY TRIUMPHS
V4 - He inspires His people to SING & WORSHIP!
Israel is called to sing and praise His name; He is described as “exalted”—a majesty above all.
HIS MAJESTY TRIUMPHS
v4 - He rides on the clouds — the imagery of a conquering King
He is not just powerful; He is the warrior King who rides in victory!
HIS MAJESTY TRIUMPHS
v32 - All kingdoms are summoned to acknowledge His rule
There is a global response to his Majesty “Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.”
HIS MAJESTY TRIUMPHS
v33 - His power is heavenly
His majesty is seen in His cosmic authority—His voice displays unmatched power.
He doesn’t just possess power—He exercises it.
HIS MAJESTY TRIUMPHS
v34 - He gives strength to His people
He triumphs FOR His people, not just OVER His enemies.
His might is moral, holy, and awe-inspiring.
HIS NAME IS MIGHTY GOD! HIS very presence scatters His enemies, summons global praise, shakes the heavens, and strengthens His people. His majesty isn’t quiet—it triumphs.

2. His Everlasting Kingdom Reigns (Isa 9:6-7)

Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
A couple of phrases are worth noting here briefly, right from our text.
“and the government shall be upon His shoulder”
and this phrase in verse 7:
Isaiah 9:7 :“Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”
The BIble here is giving us a long view of the Might that is attached to this incredible child of wonder!
He will wear government like a King wears a robe
He will wield peace like nations wage war
His might alone will uphold His reign
there will be no election
no succession
HE IS GOD ALL BY HIMSELF!
Revelation 11:17 ESV
17 saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.
And since no king will outlast Him…
and no enemy can outfox Him…
and no war out flank Him…
YOU CAN TRUST HIM COMPLETELY WITH EVERY SINGLE THING THAT POPS UP IN YOUR LIFE!
EVERY FIERY DART THE ENEMY HAS LAUNCHED AT YOU is no match for the might of our God.
AND HE HAS GIVEN YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR LIFE AND GODLINESS!
Isaiah here is speaking of the FIRST ADVENT of CHRIST when He speaks of the child being born.
He is pointing to the SECOND ADVENT OF CHRIST when He points to this goverment, this reign, this kingdom.
Most hold this out as the Millennial Kingdom spoken of in Revelation and hinted at by the OT prophets.
The point is - THIS CHILD IS THE MIGHTY GOD - Coming meek and lowly and vulnerable into our world; coming NOT TO CONDEMN THE WORLD, but to save the world DURING THE FIRST ADVENT.
BUT RETURNING IN MIGHT AND POWER TO RULE AND REIGN.
Brothers and Sisters, this is our God! This is the God we sing about!
Friend, if you think Christianity is just about sentimentality around a baby at Christmas and a cross at Easter; you need to know that THIS IS THE MIGHTY GOD - THE ALMIGHTY GOD that we worship
that has revealed Himself to humanity through the pages of Scripture
THIS MIGHTY GOD’S KINGDOM IS EVERLASTING AND HE REIGNS OVER IT ALL!
THIS MIGHTY GOD’S MAJESTY IS VICTORIOUS!
AND THIS MIGHTY GOD that came to us as a child from Heaven, the Son of God

3. His Mighty Hand Delivers (Psalm 118:5-99)

Psalm 118:5–9 ESV
5 Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. 6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? 7 The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. 8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
This would have been a song that Israel would have known well and clung to in times of great grief and woe…
AND GOD’S POWER IS NOT SIMPLY THE CREATIVE FORCE THAT BROUGHT THIS WORLD AND ALL ITS SPLENDOR INTO BEING.
HIS POWER was displayed countless times in Israel’s history:
He took great care of them.
HIS POWER was on displays as Christ came to this earth as the virgin-born, holy one from Heaven.
HIS POWER was on display as Christ performed miracles.
HIS POWER WAS ON DISPLAY AS JESUS CHRIST HUNG, BLED, DIED, WAS BURIED, AND RAISED TO LIFE ON THE THIRD DAY to completely satisfy God’s plan for redemption.
HIS POWER WAS ON DISPLAY as He formed the church in Acts.
HIS POWER WAS ON DISPLAY as He reached way down to save sinners like me and like you!
THAT’S ALL BIBLICALLY SOUND AND EASY TO AMEN IN A SERMON!
BUT…what about when I need Him and don’t feel Him.
…don’t see Him.
…can’t seem to “find Him.”
Job probably felt that way.
Daniel probably did through the night in the lion’s den.
Jeremiah had to wonder.
Paul, beaten to within inches of his life…
John, exiled on Patmos…
I’ve felt that way.
HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW IS TRUE ABOUT HIS POWER, regardless of what we see, hear, or feel:
HE rescues from distress (5)
HE answers when we call
HE GIVES FREEDOM IN A WORLD OF BONDAGE
HIS POWER CAN HELP US OVERCOME FEAR (6)
HIS POWER BRINGS COURAGE TO HIS PEOPLE
HIS POWER can bring victory…to the inner man…even while the battle rages! (7)
So since we know HIS MIGHTY HAND DELIVERS…
NOTE: THE PROVERB NESTLED HERE IN V 8-9
Psalm 118:8–9 ESV
8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
WHEN THE BIBLE CALLS US TO BELIEVE ON THE LORD, IT’S AN ISSUE OF TRUST - NOT JUST MENTAL ASCENT.
And it is NOT SENTIMENTAL TRUST in a baby in a manger or on a martyr hanging on a cross…
THIS IS THE MIGHTY GOD
who came at the fulness of time - as a babe - grew as a boy into a man
lived a perfect life - died on calvary’s cross - CAME BACK TO LIFE on the third day
THIS IS IMMANUEL - GOD WITH US.
THIS IS JESUS - WHO WILL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS
THIS IS THE WONDERFUL COUNSELOR
THE MIGHTY GOD!
and because IMMANUEL, God is with us!
when the enemy comes in like a flood…or when he creeps in like a fog…
I CAN CALL OUT HIS NAME, MIGHTY GOD!
when the principalities of the air and the rulers of darkness of this present age keep on advancing the latest shades of perversion and wickedness
I CAN CALL OUT HIS NAME, MIGHTY GOD!
when the wicked seem to be taking ground right and left
I CAN CALL OUT HIS NAME, MIGHTY GOD!
when I have been overcome with my own weakness and insufficiency to the task
I CAN CALL OUT HIS NAME, MIGHTY GOD!
I CAN REMEMBER THAT THE BATTLE HAS ALREADY BEEN WON, THE BATTLE IS THE LORD’S
I CAN CALL OUT HIS NAME: MIGHTY GOD
HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED, MIGHY GOD!

CONCLUSION / RESPONSE

So what weak things am I running to when He alone is the Mighty God?
Why would I choose the broken systems of this world to help me when I have access to the MIGHTY GOD?
Why would I mine to pop culture or social media for wisdom when I can run to the MIGHTY GOD?
Some of us need to rejoice in our salvation.
Some of us need to rejoice in how His might and power have been on display in our lives recently.
Some of us need to repent of our pursuit of weak things when we have access to the mighty God!
Our God is Mighty To Save!
