Introduction: The Silence and the Song
Introduction: The Silence and the Song
Merry Christmas. We have finally arrived. There is a specific feeling to Christmas Eve, isn’t there? We sing the song "Silent Night," and we love the line: "All is calm, all is bright."
But if we are honest, life doesn't always feel "calm," and the world doesn't always look "bright." Over the last four weeks of Advent, we have been looking at the very first "Holy Night." And we discovered that before the night was "Holy," it was heavy.
We have lit four candles—Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. Tonight, I want us to look at those four flames one last time and see how a single baby changed the temperature of the entire world.
1. The Silence (Reflecting on Week 1 - Hope)
1. The Silence (Reflecting on Week 1 - Hope)
Remember where we started? We started with Silence. We talked about Mary and Joseph walking a lonely road, carrying a promise that seemed impossible. For 400 years, the heavens had been brass. God had been silent. But Mary and Joseph survived that silence because they were Relentless Rememberers. They remembered that the God asking them to do the impossible had a track record of doing the impossible.
[Application]Tonight, some of you walked in here with a heavy silence in your own life. You are waiting for an answer. You are waiting for a healing. The message of Christmas Eve is this: God’s silence is not His absence.
Just as He broke the silence in Bethlehem, He is breaking into your story. The "Impossible" has become "Possible".
2. The Separation (Reflecting on Week 2 - Peace)
2. The Separation (Reflecting on Week 2 - Peace)
Then, we looked at the Shepherds. We saw that for them, the night wasn't just silent; it was lonely. They were the outcasts. They felt the weight of being "unclean" and "unwanted". They were at war with themselves, battling shame.
But then, the angels appeared with a message of Peace. And we learned that Jesus didn't just come to bring world peace; He came to bring peace within because He makes peace between. He makes peace between us and God, which settles the war inside our hearts. On that Holy Night, the "unwanted" were the first invited.
The shepherds discovered that the Messiah wasn't just for the religious elite; He was "For All The People".
3. The Sorrow (Reflecting on Week 3 - Joy)
3. The Sorrow (Reflecting on Week 3 - Joy)
Next, we lit the candle of Joy. We admitted that we live in a joyless world. We admitted that cynicism and despair are the currency of our culture. But we defined the "Joyful Life" differently. We said it isn't just happiness; it is an often-cheerful contentedness.
[Connection to Silent Night]Think about the line: "Sleep in heavenly peace."That is the "marked calm" we talked about. It is a steely resolve that says, "I don't have to match the chaos of the world." Because Jesus has come, we can live a joyful life in a joyless world. We can look at the darkness and choose to be the light.
4. The Sending (Reflecting on Week 4 - Love)
4. The Sending (Reflecting on Week 4 - Love)
And finally, we looked at Love. We saw that the shepherds didn't stay at the manger. They rushed to Bethlehem, and then they rushed off to tell the world.
They became the first evangelists. We summarized their response with four simple words: He Came; We Go. He came to us, so we go to the ones nearest us, and we go to the ends of the earth.
Conclusion: The Holy Night
Conclusion: The Holy Night
So here we are. We have moved from the Impossible... to Peace... to Joy... to Going.
Tonight, as we prepare to sing "Silent Night" together, I want you to picture the manger one last time.
See Mary and Joseph, proving that God keeps His promises.
See the Shepherds, proving that no one is too broken to be invited.
See the Baby, the source of our Joy.
The silence has been broken. The separation has been ended. The sorrow has been lifted.
We will transition to singing Silent Night together—
We will transition to singing Silent Night together—
Tonight is a Holy Night, not because the world is perfect, but because God is here. Christ the Savior is born.
[Prayer]Father, thank You for breaking the silence. Thank You that nothing is impossible with You. As we leave this place tonight, help us to carry this light into the dark. He Came; now help us to Go. In Jesus' name, Amen.
