Isaiah 9:6–7 LSB
6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will accomplish this.

Introduction:

With the Lord’s help, we will spend the entire month of December studying the truths in these two verses. Today, we will study the “Child born” to be Israel’s Messiah. Next week, we will study the “Son” given as the Son of God. Then, we will study the “Government being upon His Shoulders” Finally, we will study the “Increase of His Government.” To understand the context of these Scriptures, we must note that Isaiah briefly mentioned the promise of this child in Isaiah 7:14.
Isaiah 7:14–17 LSB
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. 15 “He will eat curds and honey in order that He will know to refuse evil and choose good. 16 “For before the boy will know to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken. 17 “Yahweh will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house days which have never come since the day that Ephraim separated from Judah—the king of Assyria!”
We will look at the condition of the nation of Israel when Christ came to be their Messiah.

1. The timing of His coming.

Galatians 4:4 LSB
4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,
Note the word “Fullness.” We will see this word often over the net several wees.
Israel did not Remember their God
Isaiah 1:1–3 LSB
1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem, which he beheld in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. 2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; For Yahweh speaks, “Sons I have reared and raised up, But they have transgressed against Me. 3 “An ox knows its owner, And a donkey its master’s manger, But Israel does not know; My people do not perceive.”
Israel had Rebeled against their God.
Isaiah 1:4 LSB
4 Alas, sinful nation, People heavy with iniquity, Seed of evildoers, Sons who act corruptly! They have forsaken Yahweh; They have spurned the Holy One of Israel; They have become estranged from Him.
Israel has become a Run-Down Nation.
Isaiah 1:5–9 LSB
5 Where will you be stricken again, As you continue in your rebellion? The whole head is sick, And the whole heart is faint. 6 From the sole of the foot even to the head There is nothing sound in it, Only bruises, wounds, and raw wounds, Not pressed out, not bandaged, Not softened with oil. 7 Your land is desolate; Your cities are burned with fire; Your fields—strangers are devouring them in your presence; It is desolate, as overthrown by strangers. 8 The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, Like a watchman’s hut in a cucumber field, like a besieged city. 9 Unless Yahweh of hosts Had left us a few survivors, We would be like Sodom, We would be like Gomorrah.
Israel has become Repulsive to God.
Isaiah 1:10–15 LSB
10 Hear the word of Yahweh, You rulers of Sodom; Give ear to the law of our God, You people of Gomorrah. 11 “What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?” Says Yahweh. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle; And in the blood of bulls, lambs, or goats I take no pleasure. 12 “When you come to appear before Me, Who requires of you this trampling of My courts? 13 “Bring your worthless offerings no longer, Incense is an abomination to Me. New moon and sabbath, the calling of convocation— I cannot endure wickedness and the solemn assembly. 14 “My soul hates your new moon festivals and your appointed times, They have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them. 15 “So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; Indeed, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood.
God calls Israel to Repent!
Isaiah 1:16–20 LSB
16 “Wash yourselves, purify yourselves; Remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, 17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Execute justice for the orphan, Plead for the widow. 18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says Yahweh, “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool. 19 “If you are willing and obey, You will eat the best of the land; 20 But if you refuse and rebel, You will be eaten by the sword.” For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.
God warned Israel that He would allow them to be invaded.
Isaiah 7:17 LSB
17 “Yahweh will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house days which have never come since the day that Ephraim separated from Judah—the king of Assyria!”
This invasion started a domino effect in Israel. Eventually, the Temple is destroyed by the Babylonians. Israel never fully recovers from this invasion prophesied by Isaiah.

2. The Child will be a Sanctuary and a Stumbling Stone.

Isaiah 8:11–18 LSB
11 For thus Yahweh spoke to me with a strong hand and disciplined me not to walk in the way of this people, saying, 12 “You are not to say, ‘It is a conspiracy!’ In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy; And you are not to fear what they fear, and you shall not tremble. 13 “It is Yahweh of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, And He shall be your cause of trembling. 14 “Then He shall become a sanctuary; But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 “And many will stumble over them; Then they will fall and be broken; They will even be snared and caught.” 16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. 17 And I will wait for Yahweh who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; and I will hope for Him. 18 Behold, I and the children whom Yahweh has given me are for signs and wonders in Israel from Yahweh of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
Some in Israel will blame a conspiracy, and trip over God’s plan to be their refuge.
Others would rest in the Sanctuary of God through His Anointed one.
This is still the case in Israel!
Isaiah 28:16 LSB
16 Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed.
Romans 9:30–33 LSB
30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, laid hold of righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not attain that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 just as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, And the one who believes upon Him will not be put to shame.”

3. He shall bring them from darkness into light!

Isaiah 9:1–2 LSB
1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in the land of the shadow of death, The light will shine on them.
Matthew 4:12–17 LSB
12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He departed into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, 15The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles16 The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.” 17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Conclusion:

1. The Hope of Israel is a child!

Isaiah 7:14 LSB
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.

2. He shall sit on the earthly throne of David!

Matthew 1:17–25 LSB
17 Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations. 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the One who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 “And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this took place in order that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, 23Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” 24 And Joseph got up from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

3. His Kingdom will grow without end because God’s zeal will perform this!

Isaiah 9:7 LSB
7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will accomplish this.
ZEALnoun [Gr., Latin ] Passionate ardor in the pursuit of any thing. In general, zeal is an eagerness of desire to accomplish or obtain some object, and it may be manifested either in favor of any person or thing, or in opposition to it, and in a good or bad cause.
This plan is not something God is simply allowing. This is something He is zealous about! God’s plan shall come to pass! A Child would be given! And His Name is Jesus!
