Recap Last Week

God Called Israel to Obedience
In an offering “sanctify unto me all the firstborn…”
Remembrance Exodus 13:3
Exodus 13:3 KJV 1900
3 And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.
2. God Immediately Points Israel’s Eyes Forward
Exodus 13:5 KJV 1900
5 And it shall be when the Lord shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month.
3. God Instructs Israel how to Teach Their Children
“Explain to them why you are doing the sacrifice…”
Don’t just do it and hope something catches...
Explain…

4. God Leads Israel

Exodus 13:17–18 KJV 1900
17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: 18 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.
**Preached on this recently...
Highlighted the “Miraculous Miles of Making”
Psalm 23:3 KJV 1900
3 He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
What our prayer should be:
Psalm 25:4–5 KJV 1900
4 Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. 5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: For thou art the God of my salvation; On thee do I wait all the day.

5. Joseph Knew Where he Belonged

Exodus 13:19 KJV 1900
19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.
Hebrews 11:22 KJV 1900
22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
His request:
Genesis 50:22–26 KJV 1900
22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph’s knees. 24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. 26 So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
His father’s request (Jacob)
Genesis 49:29–33 KJV 1900
29 And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah. 32 The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was from the children of Heth. 33 And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.
Joseph knew that he did not belong with Egypt...
He belonged with his people in the land of promise...
Just imagine what the coffin of bones meant to Israel:
they represented a hope of God’s deliverance, like God did for Joseph
they represented endurance in affliction, like Joseph displayed in prison
they represented right choices despite unfair treatment, like Joseph did when enticed by Potipher’s wife
Those bones represented:

1. The Promise of Death

Genesis 50:24 KJV 1900
24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
Hebrews 9:27 KJV 1900
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Psalm 89:48 KJV 1900
48 What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? Shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.
Ecclesiastes 3:2 KJV 1900
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
We don’t like to think about death
Many even have a fear over death
2 Timothy 1:7 KJV 1900
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

2. A Life of Faith

Genesis 41:38–39 KJV 1900
38 And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? 39 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:
Faith to believe that God’s plan was the right plan...
So when Israel would take that journey that made no sense… that confronted challenges… that seemed impossible...
They had a bag of bones at their side to remind them of the life of faith exemplified in those bones in the man Joseph...
“If Joseph could have faith in God, so could we!”

3. A Life of God’s Sovereignty

Genesis 45:5–8 KJV 1900
5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. 6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. 8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
Genesis 50:19–20 KJV 1900
19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? 20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.
The bag of bones represented God’s sovereignty...
God had exemplified His Master plan through the man whose bones they held in their hand...

4. A Life of God’s Presence

a.) In Potipher’s House
Genesis 39:2–3 KJV 1900
2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
Genesis 39:5 KJV 1900
5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
b.) In Prison
Genesis 39:21 KJV 1900
21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
Genesis 39:23 KJV 1900
23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.
c.) In Power
Genesis 41:38–39 KJV 1900
38 And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? 39 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:
Genesis 41:52 KJV 1900
52 And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.
Genesis 45:8 KJV 1900
8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
Whether in the pit, the palace of Potipher, the prison of Pharaoh or in Power, God’s presence was with Joseph working out his master plan...
Israel could look at this bag of bones and just believe God...
God had come through for the man who carried those bones every step of the way...
And God would come through for them as well...

5. A Life of God’s Fulfilled Promises

Genesis 50:24–25 KJV 1900
24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.
God’s visions and promises came true every time:
The dream he had that caused his brothers to become angry and cast him into a pit… “the sun, moon and eleven stars made obescience to me.” (Gen. 37:9)
In Chapter 42, Joseph’s brothers came and bowed down to Joseph....
God promised his blessing and presence with Abraham and to his seed after him...
God was with Joseph the entire way...
God promised to Abraham he would bless his seed and they would be a blessing to all the nations of the earth...
It was because of God’s promise and prospering of Joseph that the nations surrounding Egypt survived the famine...
Israel would continue to see the promises of God be fulfilled on their lives...
We also are continuing to see the promises of our great God upon our lives...
That bag of bones was something special...
