I. Wickedness in development. The sons of God married the daughters of men (Gen. 6:1-2)
A. Chapter 5 listed the genealogy of Adam to Noah.
B. The “daughters of men” could indicate the descendants of Cain, the disobedient son.
C. Noah was a descendant of Seth. It appears the descendants of murderous Cain took after their father in wickedness.
1. Galatians 3:26 refers to Christians as “sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus”. “Sons of God” is probably referring to those who chose to follow God. “Daughters of men”, in this context, could be a reference to the ungodly. It could be the descendants of Cain the evil son.
2. As time went by the righteous “sons of God” married the “daughters of men”
3. There is no reason to say this was a mystical breed of man and angel. Man was simply evil.
4. They married entirely based on looks (Gen. 6:2)
5. Does this happen today? When we marry anything that makes it impossible to please God.
6. It does not always happen in marriage (2 Cor. 6:14) Can two walk together, except they be agreed? (Amos 3:3). It frequently happens that the unbeliever leads the believer away from God.
D. In Gen 6. Noah was the only exception.
II. The Lord observed the total wickedness of man. (Gen. 6:5)
A. “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great” (huge).
B. Even “every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually”. Dirty minds have always gone together with contaminated hearts, and this leads to immoral actions.
C. The Lord was sorry he had made man. (Gen. 6:6)
D. The Lord decided to destroy man. (Gen. 6:7)
III. In a world of wickedness, Noah found grace in God’s eyes (Gen. 6:9).
A. Then, as now, God gives grace to those who believe and obey. “Noah walked with God” (Gen. 6:8).
B. Heb. 11:7 says that Noah by faith was “moved with fear”, and that he obeyed God
and “prepared an ark”.
1. God instructed Noah as to what material to use in constructing the ark, as well as the size to build the ark (Gen. 6:14-16). What if Noah had made substitutions when building the ark, and had built it of a different kind of wood (God said to use gopher wood), or what if Noah would not have built the ark the size God specified?
2. The Bible in Gen 6:22 declares that “Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did”.
3. We must be careful not to make substitutions for what God specifies. Just as with Cain, God does not accept substitutions from us, but requires us to live by faith!
IV. God shut the door of the Ark (Gen. 7:16) and everyone outside the ark died (Gen. 7:23).
A. There was likely a lot of pleading and crying! (1 Peter 3:20).
B. Today God pleads with us to come unto Him (Mat.11:28-30).
C. The day is coming when he will close the door of opportunity and stand as our judge (II Thess. 1:7-10).
Conclusion: We, as Noah, must live by faith in doing God’s will!
