Sometimes judgement is described with darkness. It is one of the plagues on Egypt, and Amos calls the Day of the Lord a day of darkness. But other times light represents judgement - light exposes sin. In Isaiah there is even a bit where the light of Israel's Holy One becomes a fire burning thistles. Darkness is sometimes paired up with exile or death, and light with life, and God's presence. So God's judgement can be experienced as an exile/death from his presence (darkness), or as the exposure, correction and removal of wickedness/darkness (light). The same thing can be percieved totally differently depending on your perspective. Jesus is the unquenchable light shining in the darkness, confronting sin and death. But for those without the eyes to see, he is only a man who was tortured and killed
