Ephesians 1:7-14
I. In Him We Are Redeemed (vv. 7–10) A. Redemption through His blood (v.7) “We have redemption”—a present possession. Redemption: to purchase back by paying a price. The cost: His blood. The result: forgiveness of sins—our debt canceled completely. B. Grace lavished upon us (vv.7–8) “According to the riches of His grace”—not out of scarcity but overflowing abundance. God does not save reluctantly; He pours grace out richly. “In all wisdom and prudence”—God’s grace is not random but purposeful and perfectly thought out. C. The mystery of His will revealed (vv.9–10) God made known His eternal plan. The center of His plan: to gather all things in Christ, things in heaven and on earth. Jesus is the unifying point of all history, creation, and redemption. II. In Him We Have an Inheritance (vv.11–12) A. Chosen and predestined (v.11) “We have obtained an inheritance”—already belonging to us. Predestined according to His purpose, not our merit. God “works all things according to the counsel of His will”—He is sovereign and purposeful. B. Our lives are for His glory (v.12) Those who trusted Christ first become examples of grace. The goal: “to the praise of His glory.” Our salvation showcases His goodness. III. In Him We Are Sealed (vv.13–14) A. Salvation heard and believed (v.13) The Ephesians heard the word of truth—the gospel. They responded in faith: “having believed…” Salvation always involves truth proclaimed, heard, and received. B. Sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise (v.13) The seal signifies ownership, security, and identity. The Spirit marks us as belonging to Christ forever. C. The Spirit as our guarantee (v.14) “Guarantee” = down payment or earnest. God gives the Spirit now as the first installment of our full inheritance. He assures us that the final redemption—the full possession—is coming. Again, the purpose: “to the praise of His glory.”
