today is communion Sunday...
...a day where we take a service...
...and focus on...
...the root of our salvation...
...i have one vs...
...to discuss with you today...
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
this is a powerful vs...
...that shows us the truth...
...about what the...
...Father Son and Holy Spirit...
...accomplished on the cross...
this vs tells us...
“He became sin who knew no sin”
this means that...
...Jesus was perfect when He took on our sin...
as we dwell on this...
...glorious truth...
...about Christ...
...and what He did for us...
...we need to remember...
...who Jesus is...
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Jesus is the son of God...
...HIs only true son...
and we are told in our passage in cor.
...that He was the one with no sin...
...what this means...
...is that Jesus was perfect...
...He was without sin...
...this is important...
...because it shows us...
...there was no reason for Jesus to come to this world...
...there was no reason He had to suffer and die...
...the way He did...
...other than to save us...
...think about that for a minuite...
...have you ever stopped to ask...
...why...
...why did Jesus...
...do what He did...
...it wasn’t to make up for a mistake...
...we are told He knew no sin...
...He never made a mistake...
...it wasn’t like He was lacking anything...
He is perfect in every way...
His relationship with the Father is perfect...
...He and His existence is so perfect...
...there was only one reason Jesus would have chosen...
...to come to this world...
...to suffer and surrender what He did...
...and that is that He loves us...
we are told that in John 3 16 as well...
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
He is perfect...
...and He gave up so much for us...
...He became sin...
...we are told...
...He gave up His perfect relationship with His Father...
...and took on our sin...
...that means...
...He surrendered the favor of God the Father...
...to suffer His wrath...
… Jesus deliberately shouldered that burden...
...knowing the cost...
...knowing the pain...
...for us...
...that we would have the chance to be with Him...
...to enjoy His presence...
John 10:18 ESV
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
.we are told by Paul...
...that Christ did this for us...
...so that we may become the righteousness of God...
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
this is an interesting thing for Paul to say...
...Jesus died...
...that we may be the righteousness of God...
so what does that mean...
...and why is it important...
first things first...
...to be righteous means...
...that one is approved by God...
...it means that one is pure and morally upright...
it means that one is living by and following the law...
basically...
...to be righteous...
...means to be perfect in moral character...
and we all know...
...that we are not that...
...we know that no matter..
...how hard we try...
...no matter how good our intentions are...
...we have all sinned...
...and therefore...
we are not righteous...
in fact...
...Paul tells us plainly in
Romans 3:10–12 ESV
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
so we know that we could never be righteous..
...without God...
so it has to be something God...
...makes possible...
...but there is something deeper to be seen...
...in our vs...
...something beyond just God making us righteous...
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
note...
...this passage does not say...
...Jesus became sin so we could be righteous...
it says He did this...
...so we may become the righteousness of God...
Jesus says in
Mark 10:18 ESV
And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.
God is righteous...
...in fact...
...He is the source of righteousness...
...He is the only Good...
...the only righteousness...
so when this passage is telling us...
...the we are to become the righteousness of God...
...what we are being told...
...is that we are to become united with Him...
...it means that we are to be acceptable to Him...
...not because we are made Good...
...but because we are made one with Him...
we see that also in the words “in Him”...
...in this passage...
...we are to be united with Jesus...
...and therefore be united with God...
Jesus tells us just this in...
John 17:21 ESV
that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me
these words of Jesus...
...are as profound as they are important...
...jesus’ prayer for us...
...is that we may be one with each other...
...just as Jesus and the Father are one...
...and that we may be one with them in that same way...
...i have been thinking lately about perspective...
...about how small a lens we see through...
...this lens makes it very difficult for us to understand...
...what Jesus is telling us here...
...we are taught in scripture that...
...we serve a triune God...
...we call that the trinity...
...the Father, son and Holy spirit...
...they are one being...
...three persons...
...this again is hard to understand...
...and is perhaps a discussion for another time...
...but the point for today is...
...the connection between the three...
...they are one being...
...they are inseparable...
that means nothing can separate them...
...they are perfectly satisfied in themselves...
...they are...
...in fact perfect in every way...
and we are...
...through the way Christ made for us...
...being invited into that relationship...
...and if you are a christian...
...if you have given your heart to Jesus...
...then this is where you are already...
...what this means for us...
...is that we are one with Christ...
...and becasue Christ is one with the Father...
...we are then connected with Him as well...
...and because of that union...
...we have acsess to the fellowship...
...of God...
...to the communion...
...the strength...
...the security...
...that is why we are told...
...to not be afraid...
...to rest...
...to abide...
...all these teachings are in place...
...so that we know where we are as the children of God...
...we are united with Him...
we are going to pass out the elements...
...the bread and the juice...
...i ask that you hold onto them...
...wait to take them together as I lead you in them...
...as you hold them...
...consider what our Father God did for you...
...think about how Jesus set aside so much...
...and suffered so much...
...so that we could be made right with God...
...to be able to be in communion with Him...
...that is why we call this communion...
...because we are celibrating...
...the fact that we can commune with our Holy Father...
Luke 22:19–20 ESV
And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
lets eat together...
Luke 22:19–20 ESV
And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
lets drink together...
pray...
