Opening Story: “The Yellow Ball in the Dark Room”

Several years ago a children’s hospital ran a simple experiment. They gave each child a small yellow rubber ball—nothing fancy, nothing expensive. Then they turned off the lights in the playroom and switched on a blacklight. Suddenly, the entire room erupted with little glowing yellow dots bouncing, flying, and rolling in every direction. The kids were laughing, shouting, chasing their little glowing treasures. For a moment, the IV poles, the bandages, and the pain were forgotten. Nurses said it was the loudest laughter they had heard in weeks.
One doctor watching from the doorway whispered, “Isn’t it amazing? The room is still dark… but the joy is still real.”
That’s the power of joy: it doesn’t wait for the lights to come back on. It doesn’t require perfect circumstances. Joy shines in the darkness, not after the darkness disappears. A glowing gift in the hands of people who desperately need it.

Transition

Today I want to remind us that joy is not the absence of problems—it’s the presence of a Savior. Joy is God’s gift that glows even in the darkest rooms of our lives.
