Intro

The fear of Yahweh = 43 times throughout the OT
Another fear (Hebrew word) = > 360+ times throughout the OT.
The fear of God = many times throughout the NT.

What is it?

2 sides of the ditch. Fear of an earthly father, unpredictable and sinful. The other side is no fear at all, bringing God down to our level.
Genesis 20:11 “And Abraham said, “Because I said, surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.”
Abraham was afraid that Egypt did not have it.
Job 1:1 “There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God, and turning away from evil.”
One of the great traits listed in Job’s resume.
Jeremiah 32:40 ““And I will cut an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me.”
God promised to put the fear of Him in our hearts for the New Covenant.
Proverbs 22:4 “The reward of humility—the fear of Yahweh— Is riches, glory, and life.”

Why is it important?

Many categories of what the Fear of God causes:

1. It gives us wisdom.

2. It keeps us from sin.

Exodus 20:20 “And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may be with you, so that you may not sin.””
Joshua 24:14 ““So now, fear Yahweh and serve Him in integrity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh.”
Job 28:28 ““So He said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; And to turn away from evil is understanding.’””

3. God blesses those who fear Him.

Luke 1:50 ““And His mercy is upon generation after generation Toward those who fear Him.”
Proverbs 22:4 “The reward of humility—the fear of Yahweh— Is riches, glory, and life.”

4. It gives us confidence.

Job 4:6 ““Is not your fear of God your confidence, And the integrity of your ways your hope?”

5. Causes us to keep our eyes on God.

The Negative side effects:

Job 6:14 ““For the despairing man lovingkindness should be from his friend; But he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.”
Job 15:4 ““Indeed, you annul reverent fear And cut off musing before God.”

How do we grow in it?

1 Samuel 12:24 ““Only fear Yahweh and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for see what great things He has done for you.”
Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 “The end of the matter, all that has been heard: fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the end of the matter for all mankind. For God will bring every work to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.”
1 Peter 1:17 “And if you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your sojourn,”
Hebrews 12:28–29 “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.”
Philippians 2:12 “So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling;”
