Mark 5:1-17

Introduction

There are ordinary days we forget as soon as they pass. But then there are days that mark us forever. A wedding day. The day a child is born. The day a loved one is lost. A day that changes everything.
A story is told of a young man who shared his testimony at a revival service. The young man told a story about his life. He spoke of how he had spiraled into addiction, crime, and despair. His family had given up hope. He had been in and out of jail, living on the streets, and to his dismay, he had become comfortable in his despair. So much so, he stated “I was more comfortable among the dead than among the living.”
One night, he overdosed and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors didn’t think he would make it. But in that hospital bed, he cried out to Jesus. He said, “Lord, if You’re real, save me.” That night became the dividing line in his life. Before that night, he was enslaved, broken, and hopeless. After that night, he was delivered, restored, and clothed in a new identity. He declared, “That was the day that everything changed.”
This mornings passage of scripture echoes a similar story. A man destitute and demon possessed, who has an encounter with Jesus.
In this mornings passage of scripture, we find a man, the bible says
possessed by an evil spirit
who came out from the tombs to meet Jesus.
he lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained.
Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles.
No one was strong enough to subdue him.
Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.
Mark 5, my brothers and sisters, tells us a story of a man who was the picture of hopelessness—isolated, broken, and beyond human help.
But then Jesus stepped ashore. And in that moment, everything changed.

Propositional Statement:

What I propose to you this morning brothers and sisters is that every person in this life will face a defining moment where depression, despair and even the demonic will attempt to derail your destiny. However, I stop by this morning to give somebody some hope...Jesus is on the way and He’s coming to confront the chaos, command authority, and call for change.

Interrogative Statement:

While we wait on this change to come, the question we must ask: What happens when Jesus steps into our darkest place? To answer that question, we must first look at the confrontation that takes place when Jesus arrives.

I. A Day of Confrontation (vv. 1–7)

Jesus enters Gentile territory, a place of uncleanness.
A man tormented, isolated, uncontrollable, living among tombs.
Demons recognize Jesus’ authority immediately.
Application: What’s good to recognize her is that Christ is able and willing to confront the things in our live to which we have no control.
Transition to Point II: But confrontation is not enough—Jesus doesn’t just expose the problem, He speaks with authority to command it.

II. A Day of Command (vv. 8–13)

Jesus speaks: “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
Legion revealed—many demons, yet powerless before Christ.
Demons beg permission; pigs plunge into the sea.
Isn’t it good to know that Jesus has absolute authority over every destructive force?
Transition to Point III: When Jesus confronts and Jesus commands, change always follows—let’s see what happens next.

III. A Day of Change (vv. 14–17)

The man is clothed, calm, and in his right mind.
The crowd is afraid, disturbed by deliverance.
They beg Jesus to leave.
It’s funny how change demands a response, either you will embrace Christ or reject Him.

Close

Good day Greater Friendship, I’ve got to leave you now. Church, this was a day that changed everything.
Fortunately, for the man among the tombs, it was the day chains were broken, demons were defeated, and dignity was restored.
Unfortunately, for the crowd in the city, it was the day they chose pigs over power, comfort over Christ, and fear over freedom.
Thankfully, for someone today, it can be the day when Jesus steps into your chaos, confronts our sin, commands our bondage, and changes our lives forever.
This is not just history — this is hope. The same Jesus who crossed the sea to reach one broken man has crossed eternity to reach you. GONE AND CLOSE!
