Isaiah 11:1–10 NASB95
1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear; 4 But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. 5 Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist. 6 And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. 7 Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. 9 They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea. 10 Then in that day The nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal for the peoples; And His resting place will be glorious.
Isaiah 11:1 NASB95
1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
It was hard to for the Hebrews to think of any hope of the Davidic line while in captivity. It would appear to a logical person that the tree had been cut down.
But there was still a root to bring life.
It took 700 years from this prophecy to the birth of Jesus.
Branch/Sprout “netzer” commonly thought to be the root word of Nazareth to which it was prophesied that Jesus would be called a Nazarene
Key Meanings & Connections:
Netzer (נֵצֶר - Branch/Sprout): This meaning connects to Isaiah 11:1, prophesying a "shoot" or "branch" from Jesse's stump (the line of David). Jesus's title "the Nazarene" (from Nazareth) is often linked to this prophecy.
Natsar (נָצַר - To Watch/Guard): This refers to the town's location as a "guarded city" or watchtower on the Galilean hills.
Natzeret (נָצְרַת): This is the Hebrew word for Nazareth, sharing the N-TZ-R root.
No'tzeri (נוֹצְרִי): The modern Hebrew word for "Christian" derives from this root, showing the lasting impact of the name's association with Jesus.
Isaiah 11:2 NASB95
2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
Fire Bible (Chapter 11) The Spirit. Isaiah mentions the Holy Spirit more often than any other OT prophet (11:2; 30:1; 32:15; 34:16; 40:13; 42:1; 44:3; 48:16; 59:21; 61:1; 63:10–11, 14;
Fire Bible (Chapter 11) This prophetic description of how the Messiah will be guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit relates to Jesus Christ’s character and authority (see 61:1–3, note). Christ would be filled with the Spirit, and his charismatic (i.e.,
Jesus’ God-given, Spirit-enabled gifts are described as
(1) the Spirit (v. 1), (2) wisdom (v. 2), (3) understanding (v. 2), (4) counsel (v. 2), (5) power (v. 2), (6) knowledge (v. 2) (7) the fear of the Lord.
1-3 is intellectual giftedness
4-7 are practical giftedness
No one else in Scripture is described in quite the same way. The seven areas of the Messiah’s spiritual gifting signify completeness and perfection.
Jesus would go on to Baptize His followers in the Holy Spirit, including who are born again today.
The Wesleyan Bible Commentary, Volume 3: Isaiah–Malachi (1. The Shoot of Jesse (11:1–5)) This statement about the Messiah gives the basis on which John the Baptist recognized Him when he baptized Him (John 1:33–34),
and Peter uses these words of Isaiah’s to speak of the Spirit of God resting on followers of Christ (1 Pet. 4:14).
When Jesus preached in the synagogue in Nazareth, He chose as His text the passage from Isaiah 61:1, which also speaks of the Spirit of God upon Him (Luke 4:16–19).
Isaiah 11:3–4 NASB95
3 And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear; 4 But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.
The Wesleyan Bible Commentary, Volume 3: Isaiah–Malachi (1. The Shoot of Jesse (11:1–5)) He will not be like the kings of the Assyrians and the other nations of the world, but He will judge with equity, not according to appearances. Like a well-qualified king, He will judge with righteousness (cf. John 7:24).
It is in the justice of God that He will eventually smite the earth itself, and destroy the wicked whom He has allowed for a time to live on it.
Jesus will come back and He will judge the whole earth. Justice will be had and the earth will be made pure once more.
Isaiah 11:5 NASB95
5 Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.
belt, with which He prepares Himself for conflict, is righteousness … and faithfulness. In this He overcomes all.
There can be no peace unless evil has been warred with and conquered.
Jesus is the only King capable to doing such a task.
Isaiah 11:6–9 NASB95
6 And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. 7 Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. 9 They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea.
MacArthur Study Bible NASB (Commentary) Conditions of peace will prevail to the extent that all enmity among men, among animals—rapacious or otherwise—and between men and animals will disappear. Such will characterize the future millennial kingdom in which the Prince of Peace (9:6) will reign.
MacArthur Study Bible NASB (Commentary) full of the knowledge of the LORD. Everyone will know the Lord when He returns to fulfill His New Covenant with Israel (Jer 31:34).
Jeremiah 31:34 NASB95
34 “They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Jesus’s work on that cross brought us peace.
(peace with God, peace with our soul)
A man is never at peace until the day he makes peace with the Lord.
Isaiah 11:10 NASB95
10 Then in that day The nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal for the peoples; And His resting place will be glorious.
This will be the day we see no more war, no more sickness, no more hate, no more evil.
