Some friends to greet (1-16)

Phoebe likely carried this letter to Rome (1-2)
Priscilla and Aquila (3-4) are seen in Acts 18 and they are no stranger to Paul’s ministry. Also mentioned in 1 Corinthians and 2 Timothy
Aristobulus household (10) likely means the salves in the house of Arustobulus, some scholars think that Aristobulus was the grandson of Herod the Great, and brother of Herod Agrippa
Agrippa was the one who killed James and imprisoned Peter in Acts 12
Rufus in (13) may be the son of Simon the Cyrenian who helped carry the cross of Jesus.
Mark 15:21 “And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.”

Some foes to avoid (17-20)

Avoid false teachers
Mark them and avoid them
They don’t serve the Lord they serve their preferences
Be wise to what is good
Be simple concerning evil
V20 references Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

Some faithful servants to honor 21-24

Timothy is Paul’s disciple
Jason, maybe the same Jason from Acts 17:9 “And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.”
Sosipater may be the same from Acts 20:4 “And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea;”
Tertius, Paul’s scribe
Giaus 1 Corinthians 1:14 “I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;”
